Greetings! Some of you folks already have an idea of who I am and why I'm here on this message board. For those of you who don't (and for those who do, but might want to know a little more), my name is Adam. I'm 25 years old and live in San Antonio, Texas with my fiance Sofia. Sofie owns a TAG named Ruby. We had been having issues with our living space, so Ruby is/has been staying with Sofia's parents. I've only ever interacted with Ruby a handful of times. Other than that, I have absolutely zero experience with birds. Long story short, I ended up with a juvenile double yellow-headed amazon who I decided to name 'Lucky'. Lucky because he was indeed lucky to come home with me. He's around seven months old, I think. I say this because he wasn't hand-fed and has no band. Also, I'm using he as a general term.. I haven't had him sexed, so I really don't know. Anyhow, we brought Lucky home about two and a half weeks ago. After a couple days of having him here, I started doing some intensive reading on training parrots and just parrots in general. Turns out that Lucky is exhibiting bluffing behavior, as well as not having been hand-fed. So, he has been fairly skittish around us. Took a few days to get him to eat anything out of my hand, and I've only been able to touch the top of his beak so far (which was a major breakthrough for us tonight).
During my reading I stumbled across trainedparrot.com and found the training and taming guide to be the most useful bit of literature I had come across. The next day I bought a few clickers and a mix of seeds. Found out that he loves pumpkin seeds. So, I started with a handful of pumpkin seeds and my clicker. Four days ago I introduced the targeting stick to him and he will target pretty much anywhere that he can physically get to. Now I'm working on targeting him onto a perch/my hand and letting me touch him.
This has definitely been an exercise in patience for me, but I'm ecstatic after every training session. Baby steps? It seems like I'm making progress in leaps and bounds. All possible thanks to Michael's excellent guide and all of you helpful folks here at TheParrotForum. I'm definitely going to be sticking around here and posting progress with Lucky as we make it.
