Decided to stop creeping, and make an account!

Postby GlassOnion » Fri Dec 31, 2010 9:34 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been reading this forum and going through Michael's training info for the past month or so. I found all the info to be very helpful and comprehensive compared to many other resources online.
Anyways, I have a 4 year old cockatiel, Apple whom I've adopted and hope to add a GCC sometime in the new year. As I go to college, I don't have all day to spend time with him.. but at least a few hours for sure every day. :)

I hope to learn lots more from this forum. Happy new years!

Hi GlassOnion,

I adopted a GCC a year and a half ago. Her name is Sunny and she quickly became very attached. The GCC are very interactive and need alot of time with whomever they bond with. I'm able to spend alot of time with Sunny, and my 82-year old mom lives with me and she & Sunny get along great and keep each other company when I'm not around.

GCC's can live 25 years, so remember that after you're out of school and trying to earn a living you may not have the time to be with a GCC. One solution is to look for a pair. I've thought about that myself in case Sunny couldn't get the kind of companionship she needs to be happy.

The problelm is finding a bird that is compatible with Sunny. Perhaps you'd do better getting a happy pair right from the start.

Mr G, if i could offer a little insight, Parrots, even small ones ie;GCC, are usually going to bond with either another bird OR a person , don't expect to have both, Your loving pet will usually have nothing to do with you if it takes a mate. That's if it will take a mate , because you are already it's mate. I have a pair of OW Amazons that are tame (if no nest box or babies ) but this is VERY rare and they are still inseperable. Please don't expect to have a bonded pair and pets.By the way here's a link to some photos. viewtopic.php?f=25&t=3765
In all fairness i must say that Cockatiels might be the one exception to this rule, but they don't seem to bond with their mates like other birds, you can mix /match mates and breed pets and still have a pet after breeding.

Thanks for the insight guys, but don't worry, I've always loved animals and even my fiance is totally cool with birds!
Captain, I'm not so sure on cockatiels, but I have heard that caiques are exceptional in the sense that you can keep a bonded pair and still have them be pets.
