I had met Sunny twice, and the second time she sat on my hand and we shared a snack. Then she began to groom my cheek and all around my right eye, very carefully. I put her on my left side, since my left eye in quite blurry from a detached retina. Then I closed my eye to see what would happen. With tremendous care she began grooming around my eye. I really couldn't believe that a little bird would be so careful and loving. I was amazed. We bonded then & there, so a few months later when the offer came to adopt her, I said "Yes".
Living with a bird is fascinating. Here is this intelligent creature, a descendent of dinosaurs, that will bond with a human. Sometimes she spends almost the entire day on my shoulders. The other evening, as I played chess online with my right hand, she slept for an hour while I grasped her gently in the palm of my left hand. How warm and cozy! She loves to have me rub and scratch her neck, cheeks, under her beak, and even her eyes! I never would have imagined that a bird would want or trust a human to scratch all around its eyes and between its eyes and beak.
I work with elementary school students and they love to hear about Sunny's antics.
Sunny demands more time and attention that I expected she would, but it's worth it. She's an amusing little friend.
