My Senegal Tiko

Postby AlbertaGirl » Sun Jan 02, 2011 8:25 pm

Hello! I have a Senegal parrot named Tiko who has a long story. Prior to coming to live with us, he had NINE other homes! This was over the span of just a few years. I'm assuming the first person he lived with didn't really know what they were doing and some bad behaviours developed. He was labeled a "problem bird" and that started the cycle.

After his last return to the parrot rescue, the people there were getting desperate to find him a good home. My boyfriend is a vet who specializes in exotic animals and birds and had done some work for them in the past, so they asked him if he would take Tiko. He did, and that's where our story starts. We've agreed that no matter what, we are his forever home..

After bringing Tiko home, he was switched from a seed based diet to Harrison's, which has made his plumage just beautiful! We moved him from his tiny little cage to an enormous one with lots of toys. We rotate the toys out regularly as he destroys them. I bought him an mp3 player and filled it with music, nature sounds and bird sounds, and he gets to listen to that during the day. He's learned lots of new things from it.

When we got him, he was a bad biter and he hated women. Now he bites a lot less and he will let me rub his head and neck. In fact, whenever I come into the room he runs up to the front of his cage and jams his head up against the bars so I can scratch him! We've come a long way, considering that he almost removed my thumb near the beginning of our relationship.

I feel like we've come as far as we can with the knowledge we have, but I feel like we could still do more to improve Tiko's quality of life, and that's why I'm here. I'm looking forward to learning how we can strengthen our bond and how I can make him as happy as possible. :)
