New to Forum and Excited to Find this site!

Postby abrown1022 » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:47 am

My name is April and I am new here! I have an Indian Ringneck who is just about 8 months old. I'm not sure if it is male or female- I am waiting on a ring to appear to know what sex, but to make things easy I just say him (hoping it will be a boy). I got him from a breeder and shipped to me from Arkansas (Im in Georgia) and he is terrified of my hands. I am soooo excited to have found this site, I have been searching and searching the web on how to tame him. All I kept finding was sites to 'train' and we are NOWHERE near that yet! I have tried so many different types of foods that he might like and havent found anything but his seed mix that he eats. He does like millet though so I will be trying that as a treat rather than offering it to him occasionally in the millet hanger in his cage. After reading the detailed instructions on how to tame him, I do have one question. I didnt see how to actually get him out of the cage.. Do I try to get him to step up IN the cage first? Maybe I missed it in the directions. I have already been doing the steps walking to the cage, waiting and walking away before I read this so at least I am on the right path! He is very skiddish so I dont really believe he was 'hand raised' like the breeder said but I love him and I know we will get there! I had an eclectus parrot with a roommate for several years that I bonded with really well and was able to train him to do many fun tricks, so I have experience with a tame parrot but this is all new to me! Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge, I will be on this site daily to learn everything I can!

Hi and Welcome! I think once he's targeting and not afraid of your hand, it would be very easy to target him onto your hand in the cage a few times, and when he's comfortable with that, onto your hand and then out.

Welcome April!

As Entranced advised, I would begin with target training inside the cage. Once you can get him to follow the targeting stick regularly, then you can target him to step onto your hand. Once he is comfortable with that you should be able to get him out of the cage quite easily.

Let us know how it goes.
