greetings from Martha and Zazu

Hi! I am a first time bird owner as of Friday. We have taken in two unwanted Senegal Parrots, names Martha and Zazu. Martha has been DNA'd as a female and Zazu has not been tested. Both are quite friendly and know how to step up. The woman who had them before us kept them in her barn and said they have been fighting. Her last straw was when one of them bit her son (probably Zazu as he's got quite the attitude). She was planning on having them put down when their previous owner took them back and delivered them to us.
So far we haven't had to separate them because they get along well when we're around. Martha is missing some feathers on her cheek and her eye is slightly swollon and red. Don't fear, a trip to the vet is coming soon to make sure she will be okay.
We also had their flight feathers trimmed today because they were able to fly around the house and kept flying into a giant mirror in our dining room. Safety first, right? Other than that we spoiled them with new feed and a few new toys, and a new play gym for the top of their cage. If anyone has any sound advice for getting them to warm up even further it would be appreciated. My boyfriend has had a military macaw and an amazon in the past so he is pretty knowledgeable on keeping birds. Any extra info couldn't hurt though! Thanks everyone!

I think the best thing you could do is separate them. Put them in different cages. From what I've heard, senegals can become quite aggressive to other birds.

If they were fighting in the past, they might start fighting again.

They probably have a bond, so you could keep the two cages next to each other. That way, they have their own space, but they won't be alone.

I think this would also benefit you, for the training aspect. It is always easier training one bird than two.

we are in the process of getting another cage for them so no worries there. pretty sure they were starved of human contact because they are eating up as much attention as they can get. i noticed that when martha gets more attention than zazu he gets a little jealous and has to come over and scare her off. other than that no fighting between the two (for the time being) and we will surely keep a close eye on both of them until we get the second cage to make sure they dont injure each other.

until a few days ago i had no idea birds could be such loving and interactive creatures to have as pets. there was this little love bird named chipper at the local bird house who just loved the owner of the place. he kept giving her kisses and hopping all over the place for her attention. it was so freaking adorable!!! :swaying:

I second separating them, as you can have lots more issues with aggression and potentially unwanted eggs should you leave them together. They would make more harmonious pets that way. Congrats on rescuing them, and hopefully you will read up and stick around so you can learn more. I love being owned by my fids and nothing would change that for the world.
