Hi from the UK!

Postby Jackblackbaby » Sun Feb 20, 2011 7:18 am

Hello everyone,
I have a lovely cockateil (the 1st one) and just looking for some advice etc.
I am concerned he isn't sleeping enough. My husband and i go to bed around 11ish most nights. He sleeps downstairs and has this time to himself till the morning.
Our son stays up quite late and uses the bathroom hours after we have gone to bed (he never goes downstairs though) but i hear taps running, toilets flushing etc.
I think it wakes the bird downstairs, as our house is quite small.
Some advice would be appreciated as ive noticed my bird is having a lot of naps in the day.

:D :D Welcome to the forum!! Birds tend to nap during the day, so this doesnt necesarily mean he isnt getting enough sleep. Do you cover his cage? That could block out some noises. :D :D

Welcome fellow :greycockatiel: owner :)

I find our birds have their normal routine.

We wake up at 5:15am, so they're woken up at that time too - they're chatty until we leave for work at 6.

During weekends they are chatty for the first few hours they're up, and like to have nap/quiet time, chatty time again early afternoon, and then another quiet/nap time, and chatty again around dinner time and right before bed.

Bedtime is 9pm as that's when Merlin :gray: asks us, "Go night night?"

SO in our household periods of napping during the day is normal.

If your cockatiel is lethargic and sleeping ALL day, however, I would be concerned there is an underlying issue, but from your introduction it appears he's on his own nap schedule.

Thank you for the welcome! much appreciated :)
Well i have had the birdie Jack for 13 months (he was 2 years old when i was given him) and he had never been covered so i was worried it might frighten him if he wasn't used to it.
I could maybe try?
Thanks for the advice :)

Thank you Greymatter :)
Yes i know what you mean about how they take naps and then eat, play with their toys etc.
I just think he is napping a bit more than usual, although he has done this before and then became more lively again.
I will keep an eye on him, thanks for the advice and its good to hear from other birdie (parents) :)
