I'm new here; I found you guys googling information on a maybe-emergency.
My name is Kaela. I'm 22 and from Pennsylvania. I've been a bird owner for my entire life -- my parents owned a Molucan cockatoo before I was born until I was a teenage. I got my first parakeets when I was 16 and living with my grandparents. My grandfather, however, thieved them when he decided they liked him better. What had been four parakeets turned into one, sadly because three had an enlarged liver that was obstructing their lungs. The survivor formed an incredible bond with my grandather, though.
Currently, I have two parakeets. Pigpen is a lutino parakeet, aptly named because she will get into her food dishes and kick the seeds and pellets around until she can decide just what she would like to eat. She has an affinity for shredding newspaper, bath tissue or paper towel rolls, and the wooden base of her playgym. She will gnaw on her wooden toys, rope pirches, and the metal support of her swing. She has also made a game out of flying directly towards my head.
Bird with No Name is a slate parakeet, much less chew-y and messy. He is much, much louder and will sit in his mirror and flirt with himself for hours. He's very vain, constantly preening himself, and a bit more social than Pigpen. He prefers women singers to males, unless it's country music. He hates the vacuum cleaner, loves bath time, and has gotten himself stuck in his hoop toy too many times to count.
Neither bird is very social. Pigpen will step up every once in a while to be told she's a pretty girl, but will fly right back to her playgym. Bird with No Name will tolerate being held and smooched. But they're both my bebes.
