Hi from Ontario

Postby Scarpath » Wed Feb 23, 2011 4:58 pm

Hi! I'm new to the parrot forum. I have 4 birds, 2 budgies and 2 GCC (green cheeked conures). :gcc: :gcc: :budgie: :budgie:
The 2 budgies are Alex and Robin (Alex is a girl, Robins gender is unknown) they don't do much. My conures are Elphaba (boy, lazy, unflighted, hand fed from birth) and Glinda (brother of Elphaba, also hand fed from birth, moody, flighted). Only 1 of Elphaba's wings are grown in. Both conures came with clipped wings and Glinda has grown her's back and is learning to fly. Elphaba, on the other hand, has only grown 1 clipped wing back and I'm wondering why.
Does anybody know? ;) :gcc: :gcc:
How can I be in two places at once, unless I were a bird?

Haha...all of us are in Ontario...and my budgies sing but they don't come out of their cage almost at all because we can't control them. We have to towel them if they get out... :? :budgie:

You should try taming them

I could give you some pointers, I tamed by two pet store budgies who are caged together. It's a lot of fun watching them flying, and getting into trouble.

Sure! That would be awesome!
First I need to figure out how to get them out of the cage without them flying everywhere. They are flighted.
Pointers please! :D

Well if they aren't tame, you don't want them out and about! :D try offering treats to them like millet when you approach the cage. Also, look up target training with a clicker, it's in the taming/training section of this forum. Good luck!

Thanks! My budgies love millet! :D
I have a target/pointer/chop stick, I have treats, but I can't find a clicker anywhere!
Do you know where I can find 1? I know you can find them in a pet store but I don't know which one. Petsmart? Elgin Pet? :? Where?
Also my budgies are sort of afraid of anything we bring near them because the 1 time they escaped and we had to towel them so now they don't like any of our human objects. :budgie: :gcc: :budgie: :gcc: :D

Are you having problems getting them out of the cage? Or do they fly everywhere when you take them out?

If you have a large door on your cage, it should be easy to reach in and grab them. Here is the proper way to hold them: http://adorablebudgies.co.uk/images/hh2.jpg

Typically, when one bird gets out, the other will want to follow.

You will probably get bit the first couple times, but that is typical. Once they get into the routine of it, they will relax.

Where is the cage situated? For taking them out, I suggest taking them into a bedroom. Cover any mirrors and windows.

Let them go wild. But supervise them. They won't be used to flying in that area, so expect a couple of crash landings and some bumps into the walls and furniture.

Take them out every day. Eventually, you'll find they are less flighty in the room. It is very important to let them have exercise outside their cage.

You should always be in the room with them. Eventually, out of boredom or curiosity, they will start testing you. They are very curious, and you'll find them getting closer and closer to you.

Keep some of their toys and treats near you.

This process does take time. But it is very rewarding. My budgies were able to come to me on their own terms.

Hope my ramblings help!
