Aloha from Maui

Postby Kathi808 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 7:47 pm

We are opening a non profit bird haven for birds that have outlived their owner OR have no adoptive person. We will be taking donations as things get going. The weather is beautiful and the parrots can easily live in nice outside bird condo's. The number of bird spaces available will be approx 20.
We will follow the wishes of the owner as to finding new home or keeping their loving companion healthy and happy here.
Any suggestions?
Aloha
K.

Hey welcome to the forum.have you got much practice with "ill mannered " parrots, got plenty of money ? Parrots need all the freinds they can get , just don't bite off more than you can chew. Good Luck, we'll be around if you need some help.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have years of experience 'bird' sitting. and I actually have a few benefactors. So.... might be looking for other bird lovers to work on Maui.. in a small intimate bird haven for those that outlive their loved companion.

Aloha Kathi! Do you have nonprofit status yet? If you set up a website, let us know, I'm sure many here would consider that a worthy cause.

Good luck with your rescue.

And I'm jealous that you live in Hawaii. It always seems like it'd be such a nice place to live!

I have a grant writer working on the non-profit end of things. If I must I will go for profit but that makes a lot of difference in a 'haven' like this will be.

Anyone on Maui looking to rent a room in my home..... bird friendly person only. Companion bird welcome. I have a Conure.

Do you know where I might reach out to elders with birds outliving them?? I'm not sure what the best forum is to reach those looking for place to leave their loving companion.
appreciate the encouragement.

If you have local shelters that take birds, you may want to hang flyers there. A lot of times, birds in shelters (at least in my area) are euthanized if they have behavior issues and the shelters don't have time to work with them. You could also place flyers in places where elderly people frequent -- laundromats, churches, community centers.

If you have a good relationship with an avian vet, you might ask their advice. That's one place I'd probably start asking if I were in that position. Establishing legitimacy is probably one of the bigger hurdles you'll face.

Hey Kathi, a good source for unwanted birds is kajiji, craig'slist , yard sales etc. yes a lot of birds will be for sale , but i have a house full of rescues and i paid for every one. There are very few free birds. Many are pet birds that need lots of love and time.So you spend many hundreds on vet, food etc and god forbid you fall in love. And after a couple of years some one gets mad because you want 600 for the bird and they;re thinkin a for ever ha=ome means give me the bird , I guess i'm just ranting because i'm a dirty rotten bird breeder. The truth be known, my babies might support the rescues, maybe.Don't look to get rich.
