Hello from NYC

Postby Polly » Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:55 pm

I found and joined this forum because my senegal has been harrassing my timneh and I wanted to find out if others have dealt with similar situations. I'm not too surprised to have found Michael's post about his senegal kicking a jardine off perches. Several years ago I was on the freeflight list that Chris Biro moderated and it taught me alot. Magoo has been flighted ever since his first molt but having another flighted parrot in the house is new for me. I don't want either to get hurt and I don't know how likely that is to happen. While I always supervise, they can fly faster than I can run to break them up. Anyone experience any serious injuries from a senegal and a timneh-sized bird? I would hate to only be able to take one out at a time because that will obviously reduce each bird's time out of the cage. I would also hate to have to trim Kiwi's feathers, although if there was a very minimal clip that would allow her flight but lower her confidence in being able to chase Magoo...

We have a similar situation here, Goffins / Senegal. Both are flighted.
Like you I have visions of the birds ideal behavior and work toward that. But to be honest, I dont think I would ever be more than an arms reach from them when they are out together. We usually have them out one at a time, or on their separate perches. But you have to keep focused on them because as you say, they are quick.
I am begining to resign myself to keeping them separate, or under direct supervision. The risk of failure and subsequent injury to them is too great. This solution works at our home for now. I do have a couple of flight harnesses enroute. I have an idea that they may respond to the suits/leads as would a horse to being ground broken. It is just a thought, so I will let you know how that works if you are interested.

Yes, Dave, I'd be interested in knowing how the harnesses work out. The last two evenings have been relatively peaceful here but it may have to do with little miss senegal having a primary that is loose (maybe got damaged) and gets out of place when she flies. She's great (so far) about letting me put her back in her cage so I'm also doing that more when I can't closely supervise both out together. It's a bummer. I see pictures of multiple birds sharing ppay gyms and all I ask for is the mere 2 in our flock to just get along:)
