Kids with Feet, Fur, Fins, and now Feathers!

Postby Vicki5280 » Tue Mar 29, 2011 1:42 am

Greetings everyone,
If you live in the U.S., you may recognize from my username that I live in Denver, in the great state of Colorado. ;) I'm really new to the world of birds, but like everything else I do, I kind of jumped in with both feet. I've actually wanted one (yes, one) for a few years, but my husband has been opposed. But about three or four weeks ago, my daughter's boyfriend rescued a Budgie outside his office in the middle of a snowstorm. My daughter nursed the little angel through severely frostbitten feet, only to have the boyfriend become jealous of the bird. So my husband granted (reluctant) permission for the sweet bird to come stay at our house for "just a few days" until she could find a new home for it. Lady Bird was at our home for six hours before I was in love. :budgie: We spent three wonderful days with Lady Bird before awakening the fourth morning to find she had crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. My daughter and I were devastated. Being the man that he is, my husband determined that whatever it took to make us stop crying is exactly what he would do.

About a week later we became the parents of Jimmy, aka JJ, a 7'ish week-old Turquoise Greencheek. He has more personality in his lower beak than my entire family combined! He's still living at the store receiving his feedings twice a day, but I visit him every morning for his feeding and stay for 2-3 hours, and sometimes return for his evening feeding as well. There's no question he knows who I am! Three or four days after I acquired JJ, I happened to notice a little green bird in the flight with the Cockatoos. I thought he looked like the pictures of Quakers I'd seen, but I'd never seen one "in real life," so I wasn't sure. I asked, and sure 'nough, he was. He and I spent the rest of the morning together just hanging out at the store, and by the time I left I had TWO birds and a cage for a Budgie. Bucky is my 1 year old Quaker who was returned to the store because his former daddy didn't have the time for him any more.

It's been a whirlwind few weeks for sure, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. My learning curve is OH so steep! I was reading everything I could about Greencheeks, now I'm learning about Quakers too. And not just Quakers, but Quakers making transitions - specifically Quakers who were nice to my daughter one day, then turn into Evil-Demon-Biting Quaker with her the next (causing her to say she's just going to stay away from him cause she doesn't like his attitude, which is the wrong thing to do!!! Arghhh!! LOL! )

So, I hope someone got a laugh out of my story, it was meant to evoke smiles. :) As crazy as it all sounds, it's all true - and I left half of it out. I'm looking forward to reading what everyone has had to say. This is going to be a great experience!

That tends to be the way it happens.... one day you just wake up with a house full of birds. :D

I'm new here too, but welcome just the same!

Hi Vicki!
I was reading your story and smiling. I started to be familiar with birds "accidentally" when I rescued budgie from the place I was working one day:)

Thanks for the welcome! As it turns out, the "more to the story" I didn't tell, is right after LadyBird passed, I ran out to PetSmart and bought the youngest, most mellow Budgie in their store. I brought Tommy home and spent hours taming him and trying to convert him to pellets and what I call parrot hash (different fruit and veggie mixes put in a food processor). The taming went excellently. Within a week or so, wild Tom would sit on my shoulder and "hang" with me while I cleaned the house and did dishes, but he was determined to continue eating seed regardless of anything I tried. I'd already bought JJ who was in the process of being weaned to pellets and hash (with the plan of living with Tom-Tom), and I knew my hubby wouldn't allow two cages in the house, so I knew I needed to make a new plan for Tommy. Ultimately, he and his wee little cage moved to a new home to live with a wee little girl who's Cockatiel bonded with her Mommy :( . The Mom works out of her house and is a crazy new Bird Mom just like I am, so I know he'll be happy.

And my (18 year old) daughter? She's trying to determine whether she can tolerate bird-ittitudes enough to be a bird person. She didn't spend time developing a bond, so when sweet bird turned nasty one day, she took it personal. Oh. And she thinks bird poo is gross. Parenting is going to be FUN for her! LOL!
