Hello from Arkansas Too

Postby Conure_Concierge » Fri Apr 08, 2011 5:32 pm

This is my first post to any parrot/conure forum. My name is Mark, and this is the first time I’ve seriously approached psiticene ownership. I’ve had my Fancy Green Cheek Conure for less than five months , but we’ve taught each other a great deal and have become fast friends. His name is Enkidu and he was an eight month old, largely ignored, so called ‘hand fed’ conure that I purchased from the local pet chain store. I had conure hands for the first five weeks, mostly from rough beaking and little actual biting, but he’s only a little rough now when we wrestle. I’ve had pets for more than forty years and never knew what a wonderful, outstanding companion a bird could be. I’m looking forward to having a small flock, even if it’s only two birds, but don’t yet know for sure what the second will be. I’ve been reading lots of posts and downloading virtually every article I could find on the internet on companion bird care, training and species characteristics. I’m looking forward to picking you’re brains since I don’t know any other owners in this area. :gcc: :)

Welcome to the forum.

Green Cheek Conures are great little birds, aren't they? I rescued mine a month ago and he's such a sweet little thing. Do you know what kind of fancy he is?

If you have any questions, everyone here is super helpful.

Thanks. He has a little extra yellow on his belly, blue on his neck and now that his over-clipped primaries and secondaries have grown back in I think he has more blue on his wings than a Green Cheek Conure, but I’m only comparing to pictures I’ve seen on the web. The pet store had no information other than his hatch date. I had him DNA sexed during his Well-bird Checkup otherwise I wouldn’t know his gender. I also renamed him since I didn’t like his original generic name. He’s a loving, cuddly clown with loads of attitude and makes my life as a servant very interesting. I just wish he was larger because he seems to be so fragile since he’s only 68 grams. He’s helping me right now, as usual, by jumping on the keys and chewing on the mouse wheel. :gcc:

My guy's favorite game is jumping on keys and playing with the mouse wheel.

Did you get your bird from PETsMART? They're the only place I've seen that labels them "fancy" rather than something like "pineapple" or "normal". I have a normal guy and his flight feathers are all blue. He has a little bit of blue on the back of his neck. I haven't seen any yellow, though.

There's another thread in another section where someone posts pictures of a pineapple GCC. The yellow leads me to believe that that's what yours might be.

Here is a picture of mine for reference:

RE: Kaylayuh - I purchased Enkidu from Petco. Here's a photo I just took. RE: Julsiebean - Enkidu tries hard to speak English, but most of his conversation is in pseudo-English. GCCs are quieter than Quakers, but Quakers are much better talkers.

He's quite a cutie. And you're right, he's much more yellow than my guy is.

Beautiful bird you've got!
