Hi from Australia!

Postby imdnt » Sun Apr 24, 2011 6:14 am

Hi All,

Here's our current flock of Indian Ringnecks:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/58811496@N07/

Tango - Green IRN 10 months.
Bravo - Blue IRN 6 months.
Alpha - Grey IRN 6 months.

I was playing BlackOps at the time and was surprised the missus agreed to the names hahaha :D

My only regret is not finding this awesome forum (& blog) sooner! Such a wealth of information and knowledge that I'd like to tap into.

We used to own budgies but have since stepped up to a relatively larger bird.

Looking forward to start some proper training with the methods outlined on this forum!! :D

Cheers!
Adrian

Hi Adrian!

Welcome. I love the names. You need a whole squadron of them.

Doesn't look like you've had the little monsters very long. How do you like them? I breed them and I love them, but like to hear others' experiences. Any bluffing?

Well I'm trying! :D We're aiming for a purple one in the next breeding season. The missus' limits is 4 but I'm pushing for 6 ... she did say no to Alpha but looks what happened

Love the IRN's! We had Tango since he was 5 months, Bravo when he was 7 weeks and Alpha when he was 5 months. Gone past the bluffing stage with Tango but Bravo didn't really go through this stage. He's been one affectionate little guy ever since we got him! Alpha is still shy but he steps up onto my hands once he comes out by himself and haven't experienced it with him yet. Skin has toughened up thanks to Tango :D

Bravo has picked up target training very quickly (2 sessions), Tango likes to do target training when he see's me doing it with Bravo and Alpha just watches.

I'm aiming to teach flight recall with Bravo as he loves to fly but is shy to fly himself. Tango is more of a climber and Alpha is a flyer but we need him to be tame before we can allow him to grow his flight feathers back.

Thanks for letting me know about your experiences with bluffing. I've been breeding them for about 5/6 years and have only had one that seriously bluffed. All the other babies, the testiness just seemed like normal testiness on any baby parrot that very quickly resolved within a few days. Nothing major enough that I would have ever thought to warn people about. I mention it to new owners of my babies just in case it's some phase they go through shortly after getting into their new homes, but I haven't heard about it. I get far more ongoing questions on how to deal with conure behaviors than IRNs.

They're pretty perfect, huh? Well, I guess all the birds are pretty perfect in their own little ways.

Are yours picky eaters or are they little gluttons like mine and will immediately chow down on anything they're given?

Tango was only going thru the bluffing stage only because we got him through a pet store which is understandable. Since then we've gone thru breeders and haven't had a problem. Tango is now becoming a teenager so he has his moments but never bites unless pushed too far ie nail clipping or vet visit. At least it maintains the toughness of my skin hahaha

As for bravo, when he was a baby he would test his beak on our limbs but he too quickly got over it.

Tango n bravo are picky eaters until they finally learn the new food is good in which they turn into pigs. Alpha eats anything I give him so I'm hoping the others would learn this behavior hehehe :D

One thing I am doing is feeding fruit n veg in the morning so by night time, their fruit n veg is finished so they're hungry n I give them pellets. I then remove their food containers when it's time to sleep so they're ravenous for the fruit n veg the next morning.

We've only started doing this since last Friday and we've been weighing them each day to make sure they're not losing weight.

Is this a recommended method to feeding them as we tend to do some training with them after work.
