Gilligan

Postby chadsnyder » Thu Jun 09, 2011 2:53 pm

I inherited Gilligan, a pacific parrotlet, from my Dad who had him from off the nest to about 6 months. I've now had him for the past 6 months and am in love with him. While I've read that parrotlets are curious and get into trouble, I have a hard time getting him to explore anything. He loves being with me and will follow me around but doesn't really play with his toys. Last night after I put the towel over his cage, I heard the bell in his cage and peeked underneath. I was pleased to see him sitting inside one of his hoops and ringing the bell through it.

I have questions about almost everything so please be liberal with your advise to me, but here are a few...

What pellet diet is best for parrotlets? Gilligan is on a seed/veggie diet now. He loves safflower and I've been using them as treats to begin target/clicker training which seems to be going well.

Beak trimming? I had the vet do it but I wasn't impressed. How do I hold him? What do I use to trim/file? and what's the original shape suppose to be like (top and bottom)?

Toys or foraging? What toys do other parrotlets like? Are durable ones that I can rotate best or shredding/disposable ones better? Like I said, he really isn't very playful right now on his own so I'm not sure of how to proceed.

I give my small parrots a mixture of pellets, dried foods, and a premium seed mix.

I had a lot of success with roudybush pellets, crumbles size. They look and have the texture of seeds. My guys took to it right away.

For toys, buy a little of everything. Find what he likes the best.
