Our NW Florida Flock w/lotsa pics

Postby apollosparents » Thu Jun 09, 2011 7:46 pm

We; (Our 6 parrot children, son, wife, and myself) live in NW Florida. We have been bird lovers for quite awhile and currently have 6 feathered kids. The are:

Crash: A above typical green chicken/monster/godzilla Quaker is 8 years old and a DNA sexed Boy. He loves anything we are eating. He also enjoys bathing, wing strengthing, untying knots, building things out of anything in his cage, "double dipping" (placing everything in his waterbowl before eating it), and sitting on us anytime he can. I am his boy toy and he is aggressive towards anyone while he is on me or near me but loves everyone including strangers. he never shuts up talking and "reaking" and has an extensive vocab. of words, phrases, sounds, and whistles. His favorite song is "saints go marching in" which he does constantly.

Sophie: Our little stealing of shiny things, never pass up a swing, gotta be on you, hang like a bat with one toenail, never take a bath, hates red objects Sengal is 7 years old and was hand raised by us. She is DNA sexed. She loves Zupreem and parrot treats but only likes human food of veggies. She is the typical girl weight watcher. She talks in a baby robot voice several words but is the perfect impersonator of all sounds like smoke alarms, dryers, coughs, sneezes, phones, ovens, and microwaves. She loves to do super high pitched squeels and screams throughout the day.

Ozzie and Thor: YUP, they have to be listed together because well, they are ALWAYS together and are Blue Crowned Conures. They are 6 and 4 years respectively, hand raised by us and are both DNA sexed MALES. I only highlight the MALE portion because our two bird sitters while we are on vacation both call them as "The MO's" As in Homosexual. They or I mean nothing bad about this because, well...They are and we love them! They are connected at the hip, very protective of each other and total inseperable. They are super sweet to each other and us always. Ozzy is older and bigger but Thor is the dominant of the "pair" Ozzy doesnt understand he is bird and is fully flighted but TERRIFIED to fly. Thor is a true flying ace and does all kinds of aerial acrobatics. They are seed Junkies and will not eat much pellets. They LOVE healthy human food though so this is what they get most of the time. Ozzy almost died 3 years ago to Aspergillosis . He was never given Peanuts and our husbandry is above standard. I only say this because I want everyone to understand that this disease can strike any bird at anytime. He was touch and go for a couple of months and had treatment by us and an avian vet for MONTHS.

SAM: Sam was rescued by us, Rescued from another Rescue from an "owner" that was not the original. HE?SHE is a Hahn's Mini Macaw. We are uncertain of age but would guess betwen 5 and 15 years old due to the disposition, feather color, beak condition, eyes, and speaking ability of Sam. Sam is a wonderful lover to MEN ONLY. SAM HATES WOMEN. Really, Sam HATES WOMEN! Sam bit a hole in my wifes foot almost requiring stiches but will snuggle with me and my son on her back but even if in it's cage, will attack my wife with such a force, I am afraid Sam will get hurt on the beak or body. I am pretty sure a woman abused Sam but I will never know. Sam is a real super sweetie though even to my wife (from extreme distance) and will carry on conversations of people and bird talk all day. It is REALLY weird with Sam because we have NEVER EVER heard a "bird like" noise from Sam. Dont get me wrong, Sam NEVER shuts up but it is always in human speech or mimicking of things. Sam constantly asks us "what are you doing" and likes to play this "opera" game saying "Hi", "hello", "Hi!!", "HA HA HA HA.... HI" in various keys and pitches. Sams vocabulary is STELLAR and speaks in FULL sentences and mumbles PARAGRAPHS of ALMOST distinguishable nonsense. I think Sam is a Girl but only time will tell because I recently sent feathers off for DNA Sexing.

Our newest edition is Apollo. I will call him "he" because of his name but we will know as soon as I am comfortable pulling out his chest feathers! He is a 12 week old (as of today) Un-Cape Baby. This is what brings me to this forum. Apollo is TOTALLY AWESOME. We have wanted a "Cape" for 5 years but when Sam arrived, we decided we had enough to take care of. Fortunately, we went to a bird show last month in our home town and he was there. My wife begged and I said no, but the truth is, I wanted a "cape" more than her so on Memorial weekend, we drove to Jacksonville to another bird show to get him. We are keeping a running diary of him and will post/discuss it with anyone. There is little to no useful detailed info on them so I hope to help anyone with it and at the same time, learn things about them. As of today, Apollo weighs about 340 grams and is slowly gaining weight. He is on 3 a day feedings but his crop is ALWAYS empty for awhile to an unknown time before feedings so I keep feeding him more and more without over-stretching his crop and he is currently up to 40 to 50CC of Kaytee exact at each feeding. We provide Zupreem fruit pellets, Kaytee pellets, Harrisons spicy treats, Kaytee Papaya, Zupreem weening "cheerios", gerber baby freeze dried yogurt "drops", baby foods of several different types, frozen veggies (warmed up), and warm apple sauce. He loves ALL of it but is homing in on the zupreem cheerios and the orange colored fruit flavored zupreem. He also LOVES, REALLY LOVES spicy stuff and ate ALL of the red chiles in the harrisons spicy treat. I bought him some food grade dried red chiles but am afraid to give him much of these because they are HOT!!!!!! but he loves them.

I'm falling in love with Capes. They're too beautiful!

Also, birds can't taste spicy things. They are only spicy to mammals :)

Does your Senegal chase all the other birds around and try to bully them?

Thanks for the comments on the fids.
As for Sophies behavior...that takes a story.....
when we first got her, she and crash were best friends and were always together if not with us. She was very calm even with him and her on me with my wife next to me. As she got older, she got tired of crash always wanting to be with her and one day attacked him tearing a hole under his wing and almost bit the end of one of his toes off. As for now, sophie lives in our bird room with ozzy and thor and plays with them all day. Since they have their own room,we do not lock their cages and we usually find them all in one or anothers cage each night and in the morning. Sophie has nipped at thor for stealing toys or sitting in her swing but nothing more than a little nip to correct his negative behavior to her. Crash and sam live in my study and while they sleep next to each other, they are never allowed to physically interact because we do not know sams behavior around other birds. They get outside cage time each day but at different times. Sam likes to hang out on the top of her cage, and crash likes to hang on me and in the kitchen and living room.
apollo has not been introduced as he is in quarantine in another room that doesn't have a return air filter. I have started walking them in to see him and sophie doesn't act as strongly as she does when she sees crash but is not as acceptive of him as she is with ozzie and thor. You can see it in her body language and eye flashes. Sengals are soooo easy to tell their next move. Terrible poker players! Time will tell how well she likes him.

I will update everyone on apollo later. He is really starting to blossom and acts like a goof ball when he is out. He has learned he has wings and drags his feet across the wood floors as he propels himself with his wings. He looks like he is water skiing. He is getting fussier to eat as mich formula but is foraging and eating more. He has lost a couple of grams the last few days as he starts to ween. I will keep feeding him though until he wont let me and drop a feeding only then. This worked well with sophie and thor. Both of them were fully flighted for awhile before they stopped hand feeding completely.
