New member with Lorikeet problem attacking

Postby krusty58 » Thu Jun 23, 2011 2:26 am

Hi all my name is Kevin from Qld.
We have 3 birds Sulphur crested called Lulu.Cockatiel called Dodo and a schizo Rainbow Lorikeet called Bubba.

We have had Bubba since he/she was about 1 month old is now just over 1 year old.
She loves laying on her back and grabbing my fingers and biting gently.Despite that it hates being touched. It is very possessive of her toys in its cage and really gets angry if we touch them.

The other night I was doing the usual play with it on my bed and with no warning it plumps itself up yells "smartarse"it's favorite word and no idea where it learnt that.It jumped up on my face and screeched and clawed the hell out of my nose drawing blood I brushed iot off and it came at me again.
I did nothing at all to upset it.
Why would it do that? It has turned me off playing with it and I may get rid of it.

it's heart-breaking (to me) to hear you say you may get rid of "it"... another re-homed bird.

Pamela Clark (parrot behavior & care consultant) has a website w/some great information on it. I can't give you a quick solution to your issue, but I'd encourage you to check out her articles, blog, resources, etc. for some insight/ideas/suggestions.

Have you tried any taming/training with Bubba? How often do you reorganize his cage and change his toys?

Maybe get rid of it was a little misworded..I love Bubba but am so afraid of hurting it if it does the same again I am reluctant to allow it out of the cage anymore and that is not good for the bird.

I have been reading up a fair bit and will continue until I find a solution.

We haven't done too much in the way of training but for sure we will be reading up and starting.
We can't touch its toys in the cage.the only way would be to reorganise the cage in another room out of sight.Even a difficult task to change water and food. But we will persist i guess.
Thanx all for the input reckon it comes down to whos the boss.

I always give a critter the benefit of the doubt. It can't tell you if it has a headache or tummy ache. Then too it might have twisted a toe while playing.

I pretend it didn't happen and keep my guard up. Protect your face. If it happens again just remember what my momma says, "I'm the Mom your the Kid". I have had to go at mine now and then with a flat hand. They think the world is coming to an end and straighten up.

It just loves the kisses so gunna be hard to keep away from face, but will certainbly be on guard.
I am sure it makes a certain sound when its ready to attack as it does that with its toys.
