Meet Loki!

Postby MaryG » Wed Jun 29, 2011 9:25 am

Meet Loki! He is or first parrot. I did alot of research before deciding on buying this particular parrot. We are already in love with him. We also have a hidden agenda.... We got him for our grandson who is autistic and non-verbal. He absolutely loves birds! We have had Loki for 2 days now and Emmett can already say "bird". I am sure we made the right purchase in bringing Loki into our family/flock!

So far they get along pretty good. Loki loves to be handled. He HATES to be put into his cage. He likes to be on his cage-top perch, portable perch, or on one of us. Lol... Emmett is real gentle and Loki lets Emmett pet and touch him. He also gives Loki treats. So far his favorite treat is raisins. We have a dog so I have not let him out un-attended yet. Boogie is a pretty good dog and loves other animals but I don't want to take any chances and she still seems a little curious towards Loki.
I was originally going to purchase Loki's brother/sister. But it was having a harder time with weaning. I didn't want to take any chances. And Loki eats just fine. He/She is cracking open nuts and eats just about every fruit/veggie I have offered except banannas. We will continue to offer them anyway. Today I made a kabob with apples and peaches and he LOVED it. He is a little spoiled already. I also want to work on training him to drink from a water bottle. Going to our first Avian vet appointment tomorrow morning. Not sure if Loki is old enough for the DNA sampling for sexing but we will try and get it done if possible.

This story reminds me of the movie "Paulie".

I hope this is the start of a long and happy relationship between Loki and your grandson.

Got home from the Vet. Loki is checking out fine so far. They took some blood and did some cultures and a gram stain. They thought he sounded a little "raspy." I am to keep an eye on him. They are going to call me with the results of the labs and the DNA next week. :senegal:

He definitely is spoiled. We have been thinking of getting a second bird already. I tend to go a little overboard with pets. I started with a 12 gallon biocube saltwater tank, and now have a 180 gallon full reef! Been doing saltwater tanks for 4 years now. I may have to sell my setup to invest in some more feathered friends. I like the fact that they interact with you more and love their intelligence.

Congratulations!!! Isn't it great knowing what you've got! When I got little Ollie 4 weeks ago I thought he was a girl as he sort of acted and looked like one. I know visually you cant really tell them apart but just going from the V which apparently stops on the chest of male Sennies but continues down on a female, Ollie's goes right down between his wee legs yet he is still a male so I guess these old wives tales just aren;t accurate lol. Trouble is, I've only ever had female birds before so sometimes slip up and say good girl!!! I'm going to have one confused parrot lol!!!

Yes! I am so glad now that it is confirmed. My daughter kept taunting me that he was going to be a girl. He acts like a boy.
