Hello! We are new here.

Postby SimseySyd » Thu Jun 30, 2011 1:09 pm

Hi! I found this forum looking for diy parrot gyms and I just decided to go ahead and join. This is my beautiful flock.
I have a 7 year old Blue-Fronted Amazon named Frankie (my little baby birdy <3):

Then I also have my little cuddle buddy Joybaby. He is a 11 year old Solomon Island Eclectus and prefers to be naked as you can see by his plucking(hopefully someone here may have plucking solutions that work for their bird). Sadly a neighborhood cat snuck under his cage while we were enjoying the outdoors and attacked him. Luckily he only lost a toe (he did more damage to that evil cat XD), but we think the stress of that causes him to pluck (he makes sure his beak looks amazing though).

Thanks for the website! I didn't know there was a whole website on Ekkies.

Thanks! I think he keeps it nice because he likes to give birdy kisses.

I'm not sure what you feed your Ekkie, but are you aware that they need most of their diet to be fresh/prepared, and that they should eat only a *small* amount of pellets with no dye, no vitamins, no additives, no spirulina? Eclectus parrots are extremely sensitive to diet due to their intestinal tract's being much longer than that of other parrots. They suffer from food toxicity if you're not on top of your game every single day, resulting in plucking, toe tapping, etc.

I really urge you to read through the dietary sections on Land of Vos, as Ekkies have extremely specialized diets unique to the species.

EDIT: Yes I am aware that they needed more fresh food, but do you think that just pellets are ok during the day? They get fresh food in the morning and evening when I'm home, but I am afraid of leaving fresh food in their cage during the day when I'm not there due to bacteria and the fact that I know my amazon will fling it on the floor and that ants will go after the food.

I have also taken him to the vet to see if anything else is wrong and she said it was probably psychological. I think it could also be that I am now in college and he has to be with my mom while I'm away during the year (though he also gets spoiled by her), and then the addition of my amazon when he was used to being the only one. He will start to let his feathers grow and then all of a sudden he starts to pluck again. I am afraid that it's be come a habit now that it's been a few years.
