Hi there

Postby Thor » Mon Jul 18, 2011 2:12 am

Hello.
I just joined the forum.
I have a YCA named Thor. He's about 9 months old and I've had him since he was first fully weaned.
Thor is fully flighted (never been clipped and probably never will be). He is quite a chatterbox, though his vocabulary isn't very extensive yet. I'm hoping to get a Corella or Galah as a companion for the two of us soon (not to house the birds together, but so they can chat to each other from their cages. I understand there's no guarantee they'll be friends, don't worry!)

Some where on http://www.YouTube.com I watched a video of a woman preparing birdie breakfasts. She was cutting veggies and fruit and putting them in different little bowls. All the while birds, ranging from a Cockatiel to a Macaw, were running around or perching on bowls on the same table as an Indian Ringneck ran around asking the others for a kiss.

This is amazing to me and looked like such fun. I wish I could put mine together like that. The Love Birds and Cockatiels can play together but the Amazons don't like them.

My Amazon cage doors are not closed. They raid each others cages. :amazon: Rambo pretends he does not like Myrtle but they will eat out of the same "fresh dish" that I give them every morning on their play patio. :amazon2: Myrtle on the other hand thinks he is the greatest.

Yes, I have heard that amazons can be quite aggressive towards other species - even to other amazons. Luckily for me I know a few people who have birds and so Thor has been introduced to them and has been very well behaved. I'm hoping that because he has been exposed to the idea of other birds (and other birds demanding my attention!) that it won't be much of a problem when he is older. But I am also prepared for the possibility that he might always have to have separate out of the cage time to any other bird(s) I get.

I would not say they are aggresive as much as defensive.

Those little Tiels fly fast and land in unexpected places like the food bowl an Amazon is eating from or the perch already occupied by an Amazon.

:amazon: Rambo bit :pied: Lemone' while I was watching. Lemone' flew from behind Rambo and landed right in a food dish. It was reflex. Rambo did not see him coming.

The little ones either don't have any fear or don't use their brains while they are out.

Thanks for the welcome messages.

Yeah, I have heard that smaller species tend to be problematic too, and from my experience with Thor and a rainbow lorikeet, I've found this to be true. The lory has no fear and won't leave Tgor alone and all Thor does is retreat or defend himself - no real biting, just lunging open-beaked. I'm hoping a 'too won't be as obnoxious or tenacious as a lory!

Thor - you just gotta love them. Those little ones are fearless and think they are "bullet proof".

They are so much fun. The first email I opened of the ParrotForum this morning was pictures sent in from Japan of a regular morning with little ones. If you haven't seen it yet look for it.

I don't have anything against little ones, don't get me wrong!
I just generally prefer bigger birds. I prefer bigger dogs too XD
