Hello everyone,
My name is Paul and I have a 18 year old Quaker Parrot named Cookie. We adopted her 4 years ago. She was a badly abused bird. She smelled of cat urine, and her feathers were pulled out from nervousness.
I have the ability to purr like a kitten, and as soon as she arrived I put her on my finger and started purring to her. She purred back, and a bond was immediately reached. Since quaker's are a one person bird, Cookie will not have anything to do with my wife of 35 years. As a matter of fact, she interrupts her if she is talking to me, by screeching, or talking real loud.
At first Cookie was real calm, happy to be rescued, but then she remembered she was a teenager, and started to act like one. She started to be troublesome, nipping at me, and screaming. But I did not give up. Every time she went to nip me, I put her off balance by turning my hand and saying NO. It took about a month but she quit trying to bite. I have pictures of Cookie sleeping on my shoulder cuddled against my neck.
Now 4 years later, she is quite a bird. She still throws tantrums every once in a while, but that's OK. She lives with 3 cats and a Huskie/Wolf hybrid, and they all get along fine. I have even wrote a children's book about her, on how to love and adopted pet.
I hope to hear from anyone in this forum. If I can help, or visa versa, that's why I joined.
