is this possible?

Postby DJJEEP » Mon Aug 08, 2011 6:25 am

I have 18 budgies, 1 lovebird and 4 cockatiels in a big outside cage. I want to ask something that I can not get answers to, so here it goes; I captured a lovebird +/- 2 months ago at my cage and placed it with the budgies, nothing happened as I know that they are aggressive to budgies or that is what is said. The lovebird (male) took one of my albino budgies (female) as his mate. I was not concerned as I know they can not mate. They (lovebird and budgie) started to mate. And laid eggs and what happened next one of the eggs hatched. The baby (3 weeks old) is bigger that the budgie, and I must make note that there is no other lovebirds in the cage and that the budgie is a female, is this possible? And if so is it then a new specie of bird? Pleas help.

I will take a photo and post it.

 :hatched:

Is it possible that she mated with another budgie but is bonded to the lovebird. I don't know enough about budgies to know if they mate for life.

I can't wait to hear from the others in the forum.

By the way - welcome to the forum.

No the lovebird is very protective from the start and no other budgie can come near her and what bothers me is that the baby is much bigger than the budgie (mom) and bigger than a normal budgie baby.

Wow that is so weird! I don't know the answer to your question either but am extremely curious.

I have heard that it is possible for birds to mate through cage bars so maybe another budgie came along and snuck in a mating session.

I guess your vet could probably tell by doing a DNA test too. I'm going to see if I can ask a few people about this.
