Hey Everyone! Im Val from Long Island NY! Im going to be a happy new owner to a ....a....a... well I havent decided yet :/ I have had an interest in birds for as long as I can remember and I have a long list of people I have bird sat for and I have loved every minute of it! When I was little I would beg my mom to bring me to the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary, and we would only go for special occasions

I am also lucky enough to live close to Marc Marrone's Pet shop and I frequently go to visit, and everytime I go in he ask's "when are you going to just get one?" but I havent been able to because my younger sister was born pre-mature and has terrible lung issues, and I would hate to cause her harm. So now that Im a big girl in my 20's and I have a great job at an wildlife refugee and moving to Northern Virginia: I think I'm going to treat myself to a new pet!! I recently lost my two pet rats from old age and I was just heart broken! I got them my first week in college and they were my little rays of sunshine thru all the stressful times in college! (rats make wonderful pets! they are 100x's better than any hamster or gerbil!!!) Im also the proud owner of a miniature pinscher who was rescued from a terrible puppy mill in Tennessee! She is well adjusted and is very calm and tame around new things, despite that fact that she was tortured for the first 5 years of her life! I have been doing research and I feel very capable and ready to start this new journey!
Now here is where I need help! I have found myself bonding better with larger birds: Cockatoos, Greys, and Ringnecks. Macaws make me nervous (I have no idea where that came from) and I can't seem to relate to conures, lories, quakers and cockatiels (although Im sure they make wonderful companions!!) . Now i found this lovely baby sulfur-crested that was just the most loving creature you would ever meet and I can't get my mind off of it! But then again I also met a wonderful young Grey that had a wonderful sense of curiosity and was just brought a great big smile to my face! And as for the ringnecks I would love to have a pair but my Boyfriend grew up in a part of the world where ringnecks fly free and he was alittle disheartened by the idea of caging some up in our home.
So please help me make this decision! Let me know about your experiences with either species! Let me know if adoption is better than buying! thanks and I hope to hear from some of you soon!
