Peanut, Cockatiel, my third bird. He is soo cute! Very active and fluffy! After 2 days he could feed from my hand. After 3 months I taught him to let me pet him. Peanut LOVES me petting him and itching him on the head. He always bows his head down waiting and he will chirp to get petted too! We bath him with baby shampoo (no tearing in the eyes) He just sits there all wet. Then we cuddle him up with a towel and blow dry him. He hates blow drying, he tries to get away from it. So he won't get sick we have to do it. We bath him 2 times a week. The only thing he doesn't do is stepping up on my hand! I really want him to! I try but he bites me and runs away. We also clipp his wings because one time he got so scared of this noise and flew all the way to the cieling and hit his head! This is my bird, Peanut.
My name is Sara and I have 1 cockatiel bird. I'm also 16 years old.
Types of Birds Owned: I used to have 2 parakeets (wild ones, not the tamed ones) but we were going to move to New Jersey so we gave them to a trusted friend. Now I was bored without a bird to have fun with so I got only one cockatiel because they are expensive. He is soo cute! I named him Peanut.
You should not be washing your bird like a puppy. All a bird needs is water. You can give it a shallow bowl to take its own bath. You can mist it with a spray bottle. You can give it a perch in the shower and put the shower head at fine mist.
Soap will damage Peanuts feathers. It will dry the natural oil out of the feathers and cause his skin to dry and crack. I hope you haven't been giving him two baths a week for very long.
You also should not blow dry him. Pat him dry with a towel and put him in a warm room. He will preen and groom himself dry.
