Hello from the UK

Postby FionaNavas » Tue Aug 16, 2011 11:41 am

:D Hello All,

Newbie Parrot owner here introducing myself and my avian companion Sky the Orange-Winged Amazon :amazon:.
Sky is roughly 11 months old and we have had her since she was 6 months old. She's going through her bluffing stage at the moment so its all life and times here
I am also mum to my two furkids Chip and Dale my two moggies :D.
I'm working on getting some photos up of Sky.
Hi again and I hope to get to know you all and make some good friends.

Fiona

I'm sorry I can't hear you ;)

Yes she's very loud and loves the sound of her voice.. She has a distinctive shreiking call that she play's on repeat nearly every morning and evening for a good 15-20 mins. Then she has a screaming shreiking call that is thankfully less played but this particular sound enters the very centre of your brain and echo's and you can litraly feel your eardrums vibrating because of it.

I wisper to :amazon2: Myrtle. Just like a human she gets quiet to hear what I am saying.

Explain bluffy. Myrtle is one year old and has the terrible twos of a human child.

I whisper to Sky too, and she will become quiet and cock her head to the side whilst she listens to me but this only lasts for a few seconds befor she goes back to screaming. I've read that Amazon parrots are naturally louder in the morning and evening then any other time of the day so I just simply ignore her when she does this and only show her attention when she isnt screaming. Hopefully this will drive home the message that it is undesired behavour and these screaming periods will hopefully become fewer and farther between

I think you mean Bluffing. Not all parrots go through this stage but I've read it is still quite common and can occur in any parrot species.

This webpage will explain it better then I can http://birds.about.com/od/behaviorandtraining/qt/bluffing.htm

Sorry for the long winded reply, but hey you can tell I done my research befor recieving her. :D

Yes and I appreciate the young ones who research and come up with things I don't know.

I had never heard the term bluffing. My babies and I learned from each other. I care for them as I did my kids. I always thought it was just the "terrible twos".

Bluffing is a common term in aviculture, it's when a bird lunges to threaten but won't actually clamp down if even touch you.
