Hi from Norway!

Postby tinti » Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:51 pm

Hi everyone! I'm a 26 year old girl from Norway who have ben reading about birds (budgies in particular) for a while now. Next week when my dad comes home from Italy I'm going to buy one or two (have'nt made up my mind yet) budgies from the pet shop (I'm visually impaired so I can't drive and I don't wanna scare the bird to death by walking him home. While I was reading and watched youtube videos about bird taming and training I came across Kiliparrot and then trainedparrots.com, and now I'm here.

But there is a couple of question I would love an answer on. I have read a lot about taming, but I've gotten very mixed advices on how long after the bird is home I should tame him? Some say a week, some say 1 day and some say 2-3 days, so ... what do YOU Think?

Another thing I've gotten very mixed advices on is feeding. Should I keep the food bowls full at all times and let the bird eat when he's hungry or should I do like we do with dogs and give him 3 meals at the same times everyday? And while we're at it, should I use pellets or seeds, or both?

guess that's what you get when you reed too much lol.

Welcome! Let me tell you that taming can be a PAIN in the a$$. I would honestly suggest looking at local classifieds such as Craigslist and search for a tame Budgie. Often, you can find healthy babies for really cheap.

Petstores often have inbred birds, sick birds, stressed birds, etc. I got my Budgie from a Craigslist ad when she was just a weaned baby. Very healthy, cheap, and used to human hands. :)

Thank you for the advice! We don't have things like Craigslist here, as I can see. I've looked on a site you can sell things, but it seems like there are very few breeders in my area. I would feel safer to buy from a breeder than a pet shop because of the things you said and much more, so I'll keep looking :)

I got :amazon2: Myrtle from Carigslist. I wanted another bird (not a baby). It turned out she needed me as much as I wanted her. She was skinny, dull and scared of everything. All she could say was hello. Myrtle is now fat and shiny and advanced in words beyond a 2 year old child. I think I think I got her on April 1st of this year. She was 1 at that time.

You could go on the web site where they sell things and put in an add saying you want to give a parrot a home. Some sights won't allow buying and selling animals. See what comes up. I have given cockatiels (fully fledged) to people I have researched to give them a forever home.

welcome :)

how long after the bird is home I should tame him? Some say a week, some say 1 day and some say 2-3 days, so ... what do YOU Think?

i would say 3 days but in his first 3 days at your home you must spend time near his cage talk to him in soft voice so that he get used to you . that what i did with my budgie and after 3 days i started training.

Should I keep the food bowls full at all times and let the bird eat when he's hungry or should I do like we do with dogs and give him 3 meals at the same times everyday? And while we're at it, should I use pellets or seeds, or both?

i really dont know if you should leave the food bowls full time or not   but i leave food bowls for my budgies and cockatiel all time and i only remove them 3 hours before training incase im going to do a training session to make them a little hungry before training.

and GlassOnion told me that i should feed my parrot pellets, seeds, a variety of vegetables and fruits so yes you should feed them both pellets and seeds.

and the best advice is GlassOnion's advice
