New from South Carolina

Postby KiwiMango » Sun Aug 28, 2011 6:03 pm

Hey everyone! I'm new here from South Carolina and a new parrot owner. I just brought home my sun conure and quaker last night. They are both handfed and about 3 months old. Just in the first day I can already tell that they have VERY different personalities. The quaker, Kiwi, is very outgoing and seems to be bonding with me already. When I'm in the room he is right up at the front of the cage looking at me and wanting out. He has not learned to step up yet, but will willingly crawl onto my arm or shoulder if I am in reach. Mango, the sun conure, is much more timid. She will take treats from my hand but is usually hangin around the back of the cage and will not approach me. I came here to learn as much as I can about training my birds and am very excited to get started. One question...how should I go about target training two birds when the conure freaks out if I separate them?

Sorry, cant help with the training but welcome anyway to the forum and congrats on your 2 new birdys. Michael has posted many training videos on this forum. Just search them up and go for it. But firstly, I would let the little guys settle in, which could take days or weeks before you do too much of the training. The first step is gaining trust and the "step up/step down" which you are already doing.
