New, soon to be Parrot keeper

Hi all! My name is Danii and in about 2 weeks time I will be the new keeper of my mums Parrot, Percy.

Unfortunately, we don't know a lot about Percy. My mum has had him for around 2 years after getting him from a bad owner. We don't really know if he is a boy as he has never attended the vets to find out.

Percy is an Amazon. My sister says he is an Orange Winged.

He is a very friendly, sometimes shy, affectionate Parrot.

My mum is out a lot during the day and felt he needed more company hence the reason I will be getting him.

I am basically on this site to get right into the world of Parrot keeping and get all the knowledge I can in order to be a responsible and caring owner.

I have no experience with Parrots so I thought this would be a good place to start.
Watch out for a lot of posts lol

H Danii, sorry you feel so "unwelcome" You shouldnt, this is a great forum with lots of really nice members. I am in Australia, so am on a completely different time zone (you- day, me - night) but anyways, I finally caught up with your post. Welcome! Welcome! I am relatively new to parrot care (approx 2yrs, but learn something nearly every day), I have 2 budgies, 1 tiel (a real ratbag) 1 cinnamon gcc. They make me laugh or smile every day. Hope you enjoy being a parrot parent.

Danii, Don’t take the immediate lack of response as a rebuff from the members. We’re scattered all over the world and work all sorts of schedules, and after all we are spending a large part of our time serving and cleaning up after our real masters….the birds !

I know from experience that it can be disheartening to not get a quick response back, especially when you have a question you need answered, but don't give up; this is really a wonderful forum with lots of great resources and people.

That said, Welcome to the forum from another relative newbie.

Thank you so much for the reply to my post. I was feeling a little lonely on here for a while lol I guess I'm just panicking a bit as it's not long before I get Percy and I don't know much about keeping Parrots.

Wow, you certainly do love your Birdies! Budgies look very cute, I see them often in my local pet store. Always happily chirping away and flying from one side of the cage to the other.

Yes, as I stated it was a bit disheartening as I really want to get as much info as I can on being a good owner to Percy and I'm a tad worried I won't know what to do with him.
It's quite scary how intelligent they are and I want to make him feel as comfortable as possible, during the move and when he is settling in.

So, I guess you have Conure's but do you have any other pet birds? How long have you been an owner for?

Looking forward to your reply....BTW, when I log in, how do I know I have replies? Nothing comes up so I have to find my own post and open it to check.

After you have logged in, under the "cartoons" of Michael and his birds, on the left is = view unanswered post, view new posts, view topics. Click on "view new posts" and all the new posts will come up. Then you can read only the posts you want to read. How long till Percy gets here? Have you asked your mum for any advice? Isnt she caring for Percy at the moment? She should be able to help in the short term regarding Percys diet, likes and dislikes. Just take it slowly with Percy, you sound very caring and he will warm to you, I am sure of it. Good luck!

How did I get to be a parrot keeper? Well, when I was younger, much much younger, I always said I would never get a bird, thought it was cruel to keep a birdy in cage. I am older now and times have changed. Birds are no longer ornaments in a cage, they are truly family members. Cos I was new I got one budgie and my son wanted one too, so I got a second only a few weeks later (this was approx 2yrs ago). Well, they bonded to each other and not us. But do not be sad for them, they love each other, are very happy, live in a huge cage inside. I did lots of internet searches, you-tube etc and fell in love with cockatiels. So I got one of them early May this year. S/he is a real ratbag, cuddlebug, a real joy. I joined this forum and more searching, just fell in love with the antics of green cheek conures, so in early July go one of them. I am so happy I have these birds in my life. Both the tiel and gcc love to be with me or my son, but can entertain themselves in their cages. The budgies, on occassion do come out of their cage, they have a daily choice to come out but they chose not too. Their cage is so big, they can actually fly in it. I have 3 quite large cages in my meals area (open plan house), so they are all really part of the daily action. I spend most of my day in this area and am constantly talking to them all including the budgies, they are never left out of the action.
My 4 birds were by choice. I have gotten 2 from breeders (budgie and tiel) and 2 from pet stores (budgie and gcc) The only one not flighted is the gcc cos that how I got him, but once his feathers grow back, he will not be clipped again. I personally prefer my birds to be flighted. Thats my story - so far!

From my limited experience I would say that Psittacine care is much more difficult than other domesticated pet care, but offers unique rewards. Consider that they have the intellect of a 3-5 year old child and are the only companion-animal who can actually ask/answer a question.

If you weren't worried about being a good owner, at least in the beginning, then you probably wouldn't be a good caretaker.

I've had much beloved dogs, cats and many ferrets over the years and was heart-sore from losing them due to their limited lifespans; I had sworn off pets because it hurt too much to lose them. After a year, or so without pets I decided to get a Green Cheek Conure, which was the only hand-fed bird available in this area.

When my daughter was young we did have a Budgie and later a Quaker; the Budgie we gave to a friend and Alex (Quaker) died suddenly at about a year of age.

I now have one Fancy Green Cheek Conure purchased in December of 2010, and one UnCape Parrot purchased in June of this year (no other pets). Things are hectic with the new FID and I'm feeling somewhat overwhelmed myself.

I'm just now figuring out some of the tricks to the forum myself.
