hi i am new here just wanted to say hi in the right thread.

Hi everyone
i have an indian ringneck parrakeet, who was handraised, she is fully flighted and i am currently training her with a clicker. I have always done recall traing in my room with her where her cage is as this is the safeest place for her in my house.

What i wanted to ask is do any of the board members have disabilities ?
i have cerebral palsey which poses some specific chalengeges for me when i am training my bird as i only have full use of one hand and not full motor co ordination in the weak hand so i find it hard to press a standard clicker with that hand when i usually carry my parakeet arouynd on my other hand while wearing a glove which she is used to.

My father handles her with his bare hands which i used to do also but i use a gove now because i can only use one hand its safer that way now that she is fullly grown and has a sharp tip to her beak.

My parrot uses my wheelchair headrest as a perch and is very used to my electric wheelchair. i just thout id share that with you all. nice to meet you . :irn:

Hi Spiral and welcometo the forum.
You dont have to use a clicker. Can you do a clicking noise with your mouth/tongue (or any noise you want to use) or even a word - make sure you use the exact same word/noise each time and then reward with treat. (another thought, is there something you could put on the footrest of w/chair that you could kick? ) Just be sure to use the same word/noise each training session, its all a bout repitition, consistancy and patience. Most of all, have fun with your little friend.

I agree no clicker needed. My birds have always been trained with out one and they learn very well. I can't tolerate the clicking sound and have found that its really just personal preference.
I use a well placed good boy, great or yay! And the point is never lost on them.
Welcome to the forum. I absolutely love ringnecks :-)

Really Liz
wow thats ace! :) My parrot is frightend of my walking frame because its silver and made of reflective metal. It also has red handels which she finds abit scary as her beak is red, soo its abit to much stimulus for her.

I have two wheelchairs one of which is 11 yrs old and very jury but shes used to it now so she does very well really i can manage a normall clicker just and i think we are doing ok so far. I am training her using died chillies as a reward i shake the chillies so she can hear the seads rattle inside and she likes the sound so i though a clicker would maybe be usefull to as shes so responsive to sounds anyway.

Ratteling the seeds is ingeniouse.

:amazon: Rambo actually looks like this. He is a pedestrian (no flight feathers). He accepts any mode of transportation.

I See, that makes sense :)
Beacuse my parrot is fully fighted i have to really carefull, she followed me into the bathroom next to my bedroom where her cage is and sat on my shoulder while i was sat on the W.C, which is really emarrassing but sort of funny i stood up befiefly to get her to fly back to her cage touching her. :)

She tries to follow me when i leave the room to go to the kitchen longe and several occasions has got out of my room when i needed to get somethig i cant shut the door behind me beause of my disability at least not fast enough shes like a peragrin falcon an amazing flier, and also very fast and cleaver.

I can retrive her quite easily most of the time via shaking the chillies and i do recall traing with her, but i am well aware that i must be verry vigillant in case of accidents or escape. Foutunately shes never tried to fly into the attic of my house but the thought of that is really terriffying. So i try not to lett her out of my bedroom exept in ger cage.

hi thats a good point about the footrest, and yes ill make sure the little friend I enjoy outseleves! I Know that clickers are not nessessity for traing but id like to use something readily avalable ane exact, so i can explain to someone else how to train her by the same method to make her live as easy as possible, when it comes to socialisation with other people.
