I have been in love with parrots since I can remember. I came across Dr. Pepperbergs research when I was 9 and fell in love with African greys.
Right now I have Taco, timneh grey and Hammie, parakeet.
Taco is 10. He was originally from a good breeder here in Texas but I adopted him from an older couple who had too much going on in their lives to care for him.
I have been training him on and off for the last 8 years and so far he knows:
Wave, shake, spin, flap, give kisses, yes, bow, ring the bell, touch, step up/off and will bark, moo and say biiiiiird on command.
I only recently started training him again since I have been preoccupied with competing in obedience with my dogs. He is really appreciating the attention and stimulation. The only problem I have with Taco is he is not a fan of most other people. He love men but just doesn't care to be handled. We are working on it but he is my Psycho Tyco after all
Hammie is just your run of the mill pet store parakeet. I searched for hand fed parakeets for months with no luck so we ended up just buying from a store that had healthy babies. He is coming along nicely and will step up and stay where he is placed. Once he gets comfortable enough to take treats we are going to start trick training. It should be interesting to see what tricks I can come up with for such a little guy.
