Hello from New York

Postby LivingFiction » Wed Sep 14, 2011 2:17 am

I've been lurking long enough that it would be appropriate to introduce myself.

My name is Michael, my family and I have recently put a deposit down on a baby Brown-Necked Parrot.

I've been doing as much research on the species and their behavior as possible over the past several weeks, thus finding my way here.

Lots of great information here, I look forward to putting it to use when our new little family member arrives.

Cheers

Welcome! Where are you getting your Brown-Necked from? Have you ever been to Fauna, the big bird store in Manhattan?

Thank you for the kind welcome.

I'm getting my Brown Neck from:

I haven't been to any pet stores in NYC, but I'll have to put that on my list of things to do next time I go down to the city. I live upstate in Clifton Park.

Okay! Fauna is in Manhattan on 87th between Broadway and West End Ave. I've heard there is a really cool bird store in Scarsdale called Bird Jungle but I have never been. I've also heard there are some big stores in NJ like Bird Paradise and Todd Marcus's but have never been to those either.

Research and even lots of research can be nice.
But all that will be nothing compared to the actual encounter with your birdie.

Then you realised the birdie can be so unique that he/she might not even be recognisable from all the stuff that you have been reading.

As happened to me and Tinkerbell.

The best way to learn is to allow your birdie to teach you, and walk on that path with the birdie together. Rather than having a preconceived idea fed by research and trying to impose that on the birdie.

Michael - Shanlung gives good advice. I whole heartedly agree on this one. A baby teaches the parent as much as the parent teaches the baby.

My baby is Myrtle (blue front Amazon) and we learn together every day. She is in her "terrible twos" so she had to learn no real fast.
