Hello, from South Afirca

Postby TammyK » Fri Sep 16, 2011 8:12 am

Hello,
I have a 5 month old male eclectus, his name is Jade. I've had him for two weeks now.
He's very cute and I'm trying to make him friendly. He was hand fed but isn't tame. He'll take food from my hand but he won't step onto my hand or let me touch him.
If I put my hand in his cage he lunges at me, so he doesn't like hands.
I let him out the cage everyday, and he's okay with me picking him up after a while to put him back in his cage.
I would really appreciate any advise, I'm just going slowly with him, trying to gradually get his friendship by talking a lot to him and giving him food from my hand very often.

You are using the method I use.

His cage is his castle and refuge. He does not want hands in there.

Work with him after he has been out for a while. Instead of picking him up and putting him back in the cage - use that few minutes to talk to him and start by touching his beak and feet. You can gradually work on tickle. Wiggle your finger and say tickle tickle then touch his chest. He might clamp onto your finger but don't show fear or respond. After a while tickle will mean you are going to touch his chest. When he gets used to that move slowly and touch wings and neck.

By the way - welcome to the forum.

I wouldn't let the bird climb in/out of the cage on its own. Step up must be the only way to preserve tameness once it is built. 5 months is still young so if you tame the bird everything can still be alright. You just have to work at a comfortable pace and maintain confidence. Here is the method:

Thankyou for your replies,
Liz, the tickle tickle sounds like a good idea, I'm going to try it.
Michael, I'm busy reading the link you posted for basic training, thankyou. It's very informative, I'm sure it'll be a lot of help. :hatching:

Yes, I'm making progress!
I can stroke his back, he's still not so sure about the tickle tickle but we're getting there.
