Hi I'm new to the site

Postby Neenabird » Thu Oct 06, 2011 1:08 pm

I have a Great-Billed parrot that is 5 months and 4 indian ringnecks which vary in age from 1-1/2 years to 3 years, and 3 cockatiels which are 3 years old.

Everything I've heard about Great-Bills is that they will do anything not to bite, but my new baby Neena just tried to bite my husband when he tried to pick her up. We have had her for a month and that is the first time that she has done that. It really surprised me. I am hoping this is not the start of a bad behavior.

Also, she does not like to eat greens raw. Does anyone have any suggestions. I know that veggies are very important part of their diet. She is on Higgins Mayan Harvest seed because I have heard pellet diets are not good for Great-Bills.

I hope someone can give me some suggestions. I'm not new to owning birds, but this is the first time for this size of bird and she does have BIG beak. :irn:

I did not remember what a Great Billed parrot looked like so I looked it up in the search.

My suggestion to others is to not react. Don't show fear and don't make a noise to let it think it won. I don't know if that would work with a beak that big.

My largest is Amazon. How big is a Great Bill?

I also had to look it up, what a beautiful animal and what a BIG beak! You may want to try soaking greens in warm water and letting her try them warm. I have heard some birds like them that way, but that is all I can think of.
