First Post... Meet Jello

Postby gabbagabbawill » Wed Oct 12, 2011 5:10 pm

Hi all,

I've been lurking for a little a while, doing as much research as possible, and am glad I found this site.

My Sun Conure's :sun: name is Jello, named after Jello Biafra (look it up, if you don't know who he is) though, you could say he is named after the dessert too, as when he meets kids, that is what they think.

Anyway, I've had him less than a month and already taught him "hop up", "down", "wave", "turn-around" as well as "go-poopie".

He came to me clipped, and frankly the breeder cut his feathers a bit too short in my opinion, which is too bad. I am planning to let them grow out so he can be fully flighted. He will fly to me from his perch *sometimes* on command, though it takes a bit of coaxing with treats.

I am slowly introducing him to an aviator harness, which is taking a bit longer than I had hoped, as though he's perfectly comfortable with me holding him, he is afraid of the harness being "on" him. He is making progress, but I'm going really slow with it, as I want it to be something he really enjoys.

Because he is just over 4 months old, he is a bit nippy, not in an aggressive way, but an exploratory way. I am hoping that trick training and eventually flight training will curb some of this behaviour, not to mention growing older...

I'm so glad I got Jello, he is my first bird, and an amazing pet companion!

He took well to his new cage and surroundings, and I had him stepping up for treats on the first day!
Here is a picture of me and Jello on the first day I brought him home:

Mine has a hatchdate of 6/2/11! Just two days older than yours. He looks very cute. Congrats on the little bugger.

Welcome to the forum! Lots of information here. From reading your first post, I think that maybe I should have started training mine at a younger age. Suns are very beautiful birds and a joy to have around. I wish you many happy years with yours.

Thanks! Yeah, when I picked him up, the breeder told me he was too young to learn "step up" (which I call "hop up") but I had him doing it in less than a day! Although at the time, I hadn't read about target training or positive reinforcement, it was essentially what I was doing by "luring" him onto my finger with a treat while saying "hop up".

Not long after that I read several books, forums, watched many videos online and read more than a few papers and blogs on positive reinforcement. Along with this site, Barbara Heidenreich has been the biggest influence on my training so far.

Awesome! Do you have pictures of your sun? I'd love to compare feather patterns/ colors! :sun:

I can take some better pictures of Jello and post them here as well...

HA! My beard is twice as long/thick right now... I may let it keep growing through the winter.

Jello likes it! When I lay on the couch he lays on his back and "preens" my beard...lol.

What matters more is that my wife digs it ;)

LOL - can't beat that when the wife and bird both snuggle in it.
