Hello from Winnipeg Manitoba

Postby Serenityluv » Sat Oct 22, 2011 6:59 pm

Hi there,

My name is Shannon and I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Are there any others on here from Winnipeg? I have had experience with just budgies before which I loved. Now I have a female Senegal Parrot. She is one year one month old. Her name is Serenity. I have had her for several months. I did do some research before I was given her but I believe that I was not prepared with how bonded she can be with one person. Often she will screech every time I leave the room which I am trying to get her to stop as she is very loud and it goes on for some time.
A woman who bred Senegal Parrots gave me her. At first she was very shy and not hand tamed at all but I worked with her to gain her trust to go on my hand using small treats like sunflower seeds, peanuts and the like and gave a one word command (can you really say that about Senegal Parrots? lol) by saying up and she went on my hand.
She is incredible, she cuddles and cooes with me but I believe she is bored. I found your site by doing a search about if I should trim her nails since they are getting quite sharp.
I hope to learn things from this forum such as how to teach her to play, maybe how to make some home made toys for her, what some of her body language means, how to get her to eat from her other bowls since for some reason she will only eat from one bowl.
Does she think I am her Mom because she always wants to nibble on my lips, cheeks ears etc? Is she trying to clean me?
I am 31 years old. I also have a rabbit that Serenity is quite intrigued with.

Winnipeg stole my hockey team! But, I won't hold that against you! ;)

From what I understand, everyone there is a hockey fan, right?

Welcome! Birds can become "one-person birds" when they receive most of their care from one person. Birds that are overly attached to one person can become possessive of that person, screaming when they leave or showing aggressive behavior to anyone who is near their favored person. Socializing her and having other people help you with training often helps with this. :) I've also heard that relationships improve greatly when the birds start getting trained to do tricks or learn new words.
