I'm new here!

Postby MokiYoki » Mon Nov 14, 2011 12:46 am

I'm new and I have currently have 3 little budgies 2 boys and one girl and I love them all even if they don't love me back... But um I joined this forum because me and my boyfriend (we are in a very serious relationship) are considering raising a male african grey and a female cockatoo together from before they are weened and we are ready for all that entails even if we have to take turns waking up to feed the babies at every hour of the night. and I was wondering what would be the best match as far as species (which type of grey and which cockatoo) goes ( similar life span, how they socialize, and being as non aggressive as possible, and as cuddly as possible) We will be looking for parrots from good breeders who focus a lot on personality traits and health (not worried about looks and them being showy) we want to be able to raise them as our own children and keep them as life long family that we can one day introduce to our own human kids ^^ how ever I do have a BIG problem.... My boyfriend lives in Australia while I live in the US and I don't want to put my budgies through the stress of the flight and Australia isn't very fond of animal imports ( T.T I'm probably going to have to leave my goat as well! T.T ) so I am looking to find my budgies a home with an aviary (my budgies prefer budgies and flying to humans and I want to make sure they are happy ) I still have more than three quarters of a year but I want to make sure I can get them to the best possible home for them so I am looking now. If anyone can help me out and give advise I would appreciate it a lot! thank you everyone!

First of all - no unweaned babies.

Second - you are currently unstable but thinking about babies. They are always babies completely dependent on you.

Third - where are you?

I'm still in the US but I will be living in Australia in a couple of months. We are going to wait more than a year before we get birds though I'm just trying to learn now. I want to make sure that we know how to take care of the birds. there happiness is important and if I can't give them that there is no point (I however can however promise them the best food (we love to grow plants and I grew up farming and seamus(my bf) is a good cook as well so we will have no problems getting them varied healthy food), housing along with a large cage that they will only be confined to while we are both out we want to make them an aviary outside to fly in, and give them lots of toys and play time. me and my boyfriend are both animal lovers and feel that pets are family and should be treated as such :) )

On the weening... the only reason I was considering it was so that we could raise a grey and a cockatoo together and nest mates... if they fought and one got hurt it would break our heart. I do know I have the patience to hand feed a pair of birds every hour of every day if needed and I have steady gentile hands. I get a strong mothering instinct for any animal and would love to devote my time to their care. I would hope to volunteer to help a breeder or some one who happens to have breeding parrots before I adopt my own pair so I would know what to do and how to look for problems and what I should do when those problems do happen. Australia has very strict laws about animals which I love they only have one rescue organization I could find and it has a waiting list for adoptions, not that many are abandoned. Importing a rescue bird from the states btw isn't an option because from what I can tell they don't allow any birds in. which is why I'm hoping to find an aviary for my budgies I have now :( I'll miss them but I think they would be very happy in an aviary I just have to find one that will provide them with good quality food and care even if I have to send them a boarding fee for the rest of my birds life I want to know they are happy and live a good life.

"Good breeders" would never sell unweened babies to you.

Unfortunately it's true, responsible breeders do not sell unweaned chicks because so much can go wrong. It's not just about getting up every hour all night to feed, you need to know how to react to their reactions, their baby biting, when to introduce proper perches and foods, and all around how to act like a bird without becoming glued to you. Also, be ready to have several thousands of dollars in the bank because emergencies can occur.
