Hello from Manchester

Postby KieranKadeStacey » Tue Jan 03, 2012 12:57 pm

Hi there.

We have a 10 year old Orange Winged Amazon, who constantly screams whenever he's either left alone in the room or when I leave.

We would love to try and teach him to do another noise to get our attention.

I tried to lock him in he's cage and put my back to him, seeing as though I'm the only one who he really cares about. But even that's not deterred him.

He's also saying hello jack, when nobody in our house is called jack. He's names Toby aswell.

We got him from a local pet store about 4 weeks ago, apparently he was a breeders personal bird.
They was moving to Australia so they had to give him up.

Would love some help with this situation.

Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum.

Toby is 10 and had someone in his past named Jack that he loved.

These birds can progress to the intelligence of a 6 year old child. If he did not get enough attention before you, he is trying to get it from you.

Do not punish bad behavior. Reward good behavior. It will be hard but find a time when he is quiet and overload him with attention and praise. If he only does it with you, have others interact with him. Let him out to play but keep in mind that he is a child and the whole house will be a toy.

Try to ignore the bad and reward the good.

Good luck. I have :amazon: Rambo a DYH Amazon of 20 who controlls the house and other animals in it. He cannot fly so he is a pedestrian at dog and cat level. He has a large vocabulary and uses it. I have :blinking: Myrtle a BF Amazon not yet 2 who is going through her "terrible twos". She flies through the house regularly to make sure everything is the way it should be. She is baby talking but learning fast.

Welcome! I come from near Manchester and it is great, I visit there sometimes.

As liz said, it's better to reward the good and forget the bad, making your relationship with your bird more positive. After he has bonded to you well, he will start to copy you, so then you can teach him t wolf whistle or something. To do this, just reward him when he wolf whistles and ignore him when he screams.

Good luck!
