My name is Nick, and along with my wife we have just adopted 2 Mexican Red headed amazon's from projectperry bird bird rescue. We are very new to the bird world, and hope to learn and gain alot of ideal information from this site. We have done alot of reading of our own, and we are up to the challenge of giving our birds a great new home and life. I have been a UKC Blue American Pitbull breeder for the last 6 years, and this is a big change for us, as we are used to dealing with dogs. I hope to get a chance to speak and gain new friends on the forum!! see ya around!!

I'm not knocking pitbulls, just bond pair of amazons aren't the most people friendly of pets.I have maybe 10 pairs of breeder amazons and only one pair will have anything to do with me. Oh they love to talk and fuss and interact with me but ,put your hand in there and you'll draw back a bloody nub.

pitbulls are very people friendly. the problem is the reputation attracts the wrong people, good dog people are scared off. i've had 2 and neither ever showed any aggression. when i fill her water dish and my bird decides it's time to take a bath in it she will sit back and wait for him to get done before she drinks(only when water is fresh, in a clean bowel so he's not bathing in dog saliva i know it's toxic to birds).

This is the wife, and I have heard alot about the bonded birds, but I will give it my all to interact with these birds... They r totally beautiful animals and I will have pride in giving them a great home and life..

I think Michael's blog is a great resource for you. Also, check out his Taming article. I think that's a good place to start because you will learn how to handle your birds. Using target training, you'll be able to get them out of the cage to clean it and feed them and stuff, without touching them. This will help you to be more confident with them, I think, because you won't be worried about getting bitten and you can focus on building a trusting relationship with them. Later you can work on touching them, but target training will be helpful throughout your interactions.
