Hello New Quaker parrot Owner!

Postby xxarmando » Fri Jan 20, 2012 10:13 pm

Hello from Miami here. My wife and I purchased yesterday our first baby bird named Luna. She is a Quaker parrot that we purchased from a breeder. She is incredibly tame does not bite and gives kisses whenever asked. Currently the breeder clipped her wings the day we got her so she cannot fly. My wife has owned birds in the past and has some experience mainly because she acquired them since they were hatched. Unfortunatly between everyday life we were unable to purchase a baby to handfeed because of the attention they need. Luna is currently 4 months old maybe a little less and is incredibly sweet. She does not know how to step up. Every time we take her out my wife holds her and cuddles her she enjoys kisses and scratches. Yet if we carry her she decides to jump off our shoulders directly to the floor. She also does not like staying still. We put her on the table and she jumps off. I was trying to look online for some article on training your bird to not jump off you yet I have no idea were to start with little Luna. All advice is greatly appreciated :)

If she just got her wings clipped then she doesn't know she can't fly. I don't think she is jumping as much as trying to get airborne.

Just close supervision, there isn't much you can do for now. Good luck!

Thanks so much today I let her wander around the house. She explored yet ended up always coming back to the cage. She was on my shoulder for a while too playing with my gauges. Overall Im gonna watch the video on how to train her to step up. Does anyone know were I could buy a clicker? Thanks so much for the help ^.^

I wanted to ask is it better to let her wings grow or keep them clipped? Shes a little clumsy since shes still a baby yet im not sure if I will clip her wings after they grow back or not. Thank you liz and glass onion for the advice.

a clicker should be available in any petstore really, I would also beleive a bigger store with a petsection selling toys, food etc would sell them as well.

wings clipped or not... well it is a personal choice... personally I think clipping a birds wings is like putting a toddler in chains making it impossible for them to stand up and walk, but forcing them to crawl for the rest of their life.... since a bird is only bound to walk for the first weeks of its life, then it learns to fly... even if a toddler spends more time than a few weeks to go from crawling to walking it is still to deliberately handicap them...

I am in favor of keeping birds flighted. There are so many health reasons to do it, plus they are more confidant and less clumsy. But it is really important that you bird-proof your house so they are safe.

She did it twice I gave her some water and then she was fine im kind of scared of somthing being wrong with her. Thanks so much for advice if anyone knows what this might be.

I have no idea what you are describing. Is it a head shake or does she stretch forward or what? Does she open her beak when she does it?
