Newbie to Eastern Rosella(Platycercus eximius) and all birds

Postby F9tom » Tue Jan 31, 2012 11:40 am

Hello All

We are new to the birds world and had acuired couple of days ago a beautiful pair of Eastern ROsella (Platycercus eximius)

Right now we began to acquire the general information about the birds world and our pair,
but... we have a question that we couldn;t yet find anywhere

One of our guests Sydney is clatting almost all time, we are observing him and we don't see any sign of distress pain treat, he is with our second guest Sky all the time they eat drink fly in house

but these clatting with " the teets" is worring us, these clatting is without noise.
Our pair is aprox 1 year old these clatting began yesterday and on Saturday both guests had a long trip in auto.

the second question is general how to measure the size of the bird?? from where to where comes the measurement??

Any help is highly appreciated

the messuremtns are made from the tip of the beak to the end of the tailfethers (atleast that is how we are told here in sweden to messure to know minimumsizes of cages etc) and if the tailfethers are plucked or for some reason missing you do an estimate and messure to where the tailfethers would end.
If messurements are made in a different way in the rest of the world i am quite sure someone here will notify you about it :)

Hello Polarn

Thanks for the info, its just like anything new subject and we heard that Eastern Rosella grows to about 30 cm so with that info we can build or buy appropiate cage but they are going to fly around the house and in mid may we plan to make a flying pavilion for them in the garden.

Thanks again for the info

I would consider a cage that is atleast 2 times the parrots lenght in any direction, preferebly larger and recomended one of the sides longer to give some more room for flight, as an example a legal cage here for a 30cm bird would be 60x120 and atleast 80high. If you dont live in sweden and do not have these regulations on you you might get away with a slightly smaller cage, but i would definitly not go with any side under 60cm.
sidenote, I do not know much about rosellas, if they require larger cages than other species or something. I just looked at the table we have for cagesizes over here when keeping birds in your home. But overall I'd say the bigger the better.

Thanks again Polarn

Really I appreciatte Your helpfull info

The cage we have now is exactly the measurements You are providing having three doors two in the front and one big on the top, the doors are open so Sydney and Sky are free to go out and fly in the house and they come back to play eat drink and rest, at nights we close the doors.
