Greetings fellow bird brains

3 weeks ago, I would have considered that an insult. Now I know better. I have learned these are very intelligent animals

My name is Denny. I live in south Arkansas. I am a father of 2, and I work as a lab tech. I just recently got engaged to a girl who owns a goffin's cockatoo. She brought Marley to my house a couple weeks ago, and we hit it off. I started by letting Heather ( fiancée ) get marley out of her cage. Then I went and sat by the cage. Heather was amazed that marley walk right over and stepped up on my arm. Funny thing is marley will do tricks for me. But when Heather tries, she just sits there and does nothing. I'm assuming marley thinks I'm a new toy. I've always said " a smart pet will do tricks, a really smart pet makes you do tricks.

Well to make a short story long, I'm hooked, and want a bird of my very own. A couple of weeks ago we were at pet smart and I got to mess around with a and fell in love with the little guy. Heather who has worked with birds for the past 15 or so years, says she wants to get a baby and hand feed it. She knows breeder that can probably find us one. I just have to be patient.

I have been lurking for about a week, and have learned a lot from reading posts, michael's blog, ect
I look forward to getting to know each of you, and welcome any suggestions you might have

Welcome Denny~ I am new here also. I wish I would of been able to get a hand raised parrot, I hear it is much easier for them to trust us humans if they are raised by us. Best of luck with your new family and keep us posted when you get your new baby.

You're very lucky that her parrot even tolerates you. Please save yourself the trouble and just be happy w/ the bird you have now. Don't risk causing problems in your relationship by getting another one. Isn't her's enough?

First of all, let me just put in a thought: parent-fed birds have been found to have fewer psychological problems and behavioral issues, such as plucking, screaming and self-mutilation, than hand-fed birds do. A parent-fed bird that is handled and tamed by the breeder is an amazing companion. Also, most reputable breeders will not sell you an unweaned baby bird and in some places it is against the law.

Second, congrats on your engagement and welcome to the forum! Birds are great companions - and a lot of work - and really funny to watch. I suggest you go to shelters and rescues and play with all the species you can and research the bird's needs before you bring one home.

Update. We have now added to the flock

My daughter loved marley since she doesn't have a pet of her on, we got her a named George. He is a very loving bird, and has no fear. Walked out of his cage right up to my dog. Funniest thing you ever saw.he loves getting his head scratched. In fact, he is quite insistent on it.

Heather also picked up a baby black mask love bird. She got him from a freind that's a breeder in exchange for trimming goat hooves. This also paid for my that he will be getting for us after the next hatch. I'm stoked
