I'm very pleased to hear Percy is doing well and on his way to forgaing!! :)

As for the contact call, (when Percy whistles to you & you whistle back) I'm glad you established one early on. That's very good. My Caique has a very loud, shrill one, sounds exaclty like a smoke alarm. I too, am trying to get her to learn the "sexy whistle." :lol: When she makes her contact call I completely ignore her. Then when she makes a quieter noise I make the "sexy whistle" to her and if she replies in a softer tone or her "kissing" nosie I come running into the room and praise her. :D If she replies in her smoke alarm voice then we start the process all over lol ... All in good time! ;)

Also, I love the close up pic of Percy! :D

Lol I envy you two. I couldn't make the sexy whistle if my life depended on it. In fact the only whistle I can do is loud and shrill lol.

@Rokisha

Wow. Joe sounds like a really playful and cuddly bird :D Percy is nowhere as friendly with people for now, although he is improving each day with training. Now I can pretty much touch his beak all I want with no problems (most of the time) although he has to be `in he mood` for him to allow me to touch anywhere else, even his head. Also he is becoming less and less afraid of my hand. Instead of giving him treats using my index finger and thumb now I am putting the treat on the palm of my hand and letting him get it. He does, but he darts away as soon as he gets the treat :lol: But at least now I can replace the food and rearrange his cage without him getting scared of me at all. He knows that I am putting in fresh food :D

@ brfussne

I know what you mean by very loud and shrill :lol: Percy's normal call sounds kind of like the high pitched squeal you get from wipers running on a windscreen that isn't quite wet enough :lol: When he used to start doing it non-stop it drives you crazy very very quickly. hehe. No wonder I wanted to teach him something else :D Good luck with Kismet's training!

@Rokisha

Maybe Percy or Kismet can teach Joe to do the sexy whistle and then she can teach you :lol:

Lol probably so. We bought joe six more toys today, one being a rather large parrot piniata. She picked out all six herself btw. That and we got her a bird bath which she loves to no end. How are percy and kismet btw?

That sounds cool! :D

I really need to get Percy a bird bath too. He has a largish bowl which he likes to dip his head in, but he cannot get all the way inside.

There is a big new pet shop that has opened last week 15mins by car from my house. I am dying to go have a look! :lol:

I would be excited to lol. I have yet to do any training aside from step up and step down with joe. I would like to try the clicker training but for now the kids, hubby, and I just talk to her, feed her treats by hand, or play with her. She tends to like to sleep on the top in front of her cage or on the very top perch. Btw bsf I love that pic of you and your bird so close to eachother, its adorable.

Re: Hello from Malta

Postby chrisp » Tue Mar 27, 2012 5:49 am

So I finally managed to go over to the new Pet Shop. It's still work-in-progress (just opened last week or so) but it's pretty huge (for Malta).

I ended up buying the pellets, some millet spray, a nice big wooden swing and a wooden ladder. :D

So this morning before work i put the swing is his cage. He didn't go on it, but he is fine with it. Was inspecting it, deciding what to make of it. The wood of the swing is very similar to that of his perch so I don't think there will be problems at all with him adjusting to it. The pellets he seems to like as well. I think he appreciates the crunchiness :lol: So now in his bowl there is a mix of seeds and pellets apart from the usual veggies and fruit which I hang around the cage. The millet spray he seems to like as well but I don't think he'll be a big fan of it. The ladder on the other hand he is afraid of. So for now it is still outside the cage, until he gets used to it. I need to get some new pics of his cage which is now super colorful and filled with toys and stuff :D

Also, taming is going pretty well. As long as I stick to his beak and `maybe` the top of his head he seems to enjoy my touch. Now he even comes willingly into my waiting fingers if I say `tickle`. He still doesn't like it if I try and touch him anywhere else though and will try to bite immediately. Usually succeeding. :lol: And it is clear that now he is getting much more confident. Whereas say a week ago I could leave his cage open pretty much indefinitely and he would just stay inside, now he is very eager to leave his cage. If you leave the cage door open he will climb up the door and onto the cage roof. Unfortunately he still doesn't like to be approached at all when outside the cage and will fly away immediately. Finding himself in unknown surroundings around the house he gets terrified and will try to find a hole somewhere to hide. At this point he won't let me approach him at all and will be afraid of me as well. Fortunately, I got him used to recognizing his cage and climbing in, so if I just bring his cage over next to him and leave the room, he will climb back inside his cage on his own.

Can anyone please suggest ways of making him less fearful when outside the cage? When he is in cage he doesn't fear me at all. But when he is outside he seems to be scared of everything and everyone.

Also, my approach to increasing the places where I can touch him is to make sure to touch him as often as possible and reward him for it. Is this a good approach? He seems to be really comfortable with me touching certain places but others are completely out of bounds.

Thanks!
