Postby Paco'sPop » Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:33 pm

Hi EVeryone,

I have a Quaker (Monk) :monk: Parakeet named Paco who has been part of my family for almost 20 years now. i love him very much but i do not have the time to care for him like i used to and he is not as happy as he should be. I would like to find him a new home but am not sure how to go about it. I just dont want to give him away to a sancuary but would live to give him to ahome that understnands parrots and the attention they need to be happy.

Any one have any suggestions on what I can do?

Welcome to the forum.

Where are you? I ask because we may have someone near you who would adopt it.

It would be like an adoption. First you advertize this beautiful baby. Then you screan the callers. Then you do interviews and follow up with visiting their home.

I'm sorry you need to re-home your Quaker.

Have you tried looking up your local parrot rescue group? They are usually pretty good at trying to make sure parrots and new homes are paired up pretty well.

Is there anyone Paco knows already who is willing to take him so it's not such a dramatic change? Have you checked with your veterinarian to see if they know anyone who would be willing to take him in?

I can't speak for your parrot rescue, but I know the one here really tries to screen applicants to make sure they are in a good "forever" home. If you google Florida parrot rescue you can see what their requirements are for adopting and even fostering and you'll see what I mean. Look up yours and see what their requirements are.

Hopefully your vet will know someone, or one of the staff members will be willing to take him. I know a LOT of pups and kittens (and a few birds) that have found homes that way! (I work for a mainly dog/cat vet). Many will even have notice boards in their office where you can post something to help find him a home. That way you can screen them as well.

Oh, and if your vet doesn't have anyone interested, call other bird vets in the area and ask if you can post something. If interested, then you can have them meet Paco and see how he does with them, and ask if they have other pets he will need to get along well enough with that he doesn't get too stressed living in the same household.
