new bird owner

Postby millie12 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 5:17 pm

Hi, Millie and I are new to each other as of last Friday. She is a Moluccan Cockatoo. She is 16 years old and is a really sweet bird. I am enjoying her tons! I also have 3 dogs, and everyone is adjusting slowly but surely. Any advice for a first time bird owner?

You do know about Moluccan cockatoo screams right, you know how loud they are? And cockatoos aren't really for novice bird owners.
Other than that, you need to completely take apart the cage to clean it once a week and spot clean it daily, the bird needs fresh fruit and veggies every day, cockatoos need a lot of time outside of their cage every day. And they need to be doing something outside of their cage not just sitting on top of it. They need plenty of toys to keep them busy when your gone too. And if you want your bird to be happy you need to challenge him/her, I teach mine to talk and do tricks. Back to toys, they need to be swaped out once a week to keep your bird from getting bored.
If you need any more advice just ask.
