Hello from joe and family.

Postby Rokisha » Tue Mar 20, 2012 5:23 pm

I am a new bird owner of course. I recently bought a senegal parrot a few days ago. Of course I hadn't planned on buying a bird when I went to the pet shop considering my cat died recently but when I seen this bird I just had to get him/her. We decided to call him/her joe and plan to find outthe gender in about two weeks from now. I personally think joe is female due to her coloring. I did read that the females had more green then yellow undertail feathers. So until we take joe to the vet in a few weeks I will call joe a she lol. She has been a great joy and stress reliever for me and she does well with my kids and husband. I am not sure how old she is but the guy who sold her to me said he thinks she is about ten months to a year. She was a bit nippy the first two days but she did cut back on that. She loves to grab things from any one of us and play tug of war it seems.

I was just wondering if anyone elses parrot sticks out its tounge while arching its wings and standing on one foot. I have yet to look up what that means but my hubby thinks she is teasing or as he says, making monkey shines.

If I am understanding what you mean by going one foot and extending the wings, then yes, Percy does it quite often too.

I think he is just stretching this legs and wings. He usually lifts one leg and stretches a wing backwards, then does the other pair, then stretches his wings directly upwards. :D

And yes, he does very cute noises when he does this as well.

When I see him doing that I feel I need to let him out of the cage and let him fly around the room a bit. So he can get some exercise in.

But since he doesn't like to be approached that much (especially when out of the cage) he tends to get scared if anyone goes anywhere near him and he starts flying around in a panic.

So I am waiting until he is very comfortable with people whilst inside the cage. Hopefully then he won't be as inclined to fly away.

Maybe I'll give it another go next week. :D

Sounds like a plan. Joe was clipped when we bought her so she just hops around and walks. I plan on letting those flight feathers grow back though, would love to see her fly. I've taken her outside a few times to play and she loves it.
