Green Cheeck Conure behavior

Postby Kitty Biscuits » Thu Mar 29, 2012 1:26 pm

I'm new to the forum, I found this website as I was searching for answers to some behaviors my Green Cheek Conure was exhibiting earlier today. So, the background info. I'm a Biology professor and help care for several birds in our department, including Gouldian Finches. Currently the breeding pair is in my office (separated from the rest of the aviary). My conure comes to work with me - and has been acting overly aggressive this week. I was wondering if it was due to watching the finches in their copulatory behavior. Cassie (my conure) is not usually so aggressive, she is very lovey and demanding. Today I observed her sitting on top of her cage, wing flapping and making exagerated regurgitation movements. She did this for several minutes, then stopped and went back to her normal activites. She didn't make any sound while doing this. I'm wondering if I have a "he" instead of a "she" - we never paid to have her sexed. Also, if this is normal copulatory behaviour for green cheeck conures? I have not owned a bird before her, and am not familiar with parrot breeding behavior. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated! :senegal:

I'm thinking cassie is just hormonal right now. This usually happens around this time of year. The regurgitation is also a typical sign of mating behavior. If she's doing this directly toward you, this may be a sign that she wants to be your mate and is becoming aggressive because she is protective. But either way, cassie could be a male or a female, even with this behavior.

Just to make sure, how is the air quality where cassie is? Any place excessively hot, stuffy, scented may cause respiratory problems and cause the jerky regurgitation movements. Oh and another thing is, yes, birds do typically start getting hormonal when they are in an environment where other birds are breeding. - hope this could help!
