New Parrot!, need species identification

Postby DanielA » Tue Apr 03, 2012 7:27 pm

Hello everybody, this morning I went to the flea market, and saw all types of horribly treated birds  .After a while I saw a beautiful little bird a guy was showing off, he made it step up, forcing at it's beak so it would think it would fall, thus stepping up. She was so pretty and her living conditions were so horrible, that I decided that she would be mine and wouldn't suffer more. Problem is she's scared of everything, taking her out of the cardboard shoe box that she was forced to sit in for half an hour, (I already had a cage and the guy didn't sell any) was a nightmare. She took like half an hour standing there looking at me. When she finally decided to come out she wouldn't step up, she bit me, and then scurried from one place to another, i had to actually towel her to put her in her cage, and since then I've been talking to her and giving her food through the cage bars. Plus, she won't take any seeds, ( I can't find a place were they sell pellets), and will only eat mango and plantain.
Any advice?

Also the guy was such an idiot that the only name he could give the bird was "Parrot that talks", so I'd really like to know what species she is, here are some pics.

Thats horrible! I'm glad you saved her from that wretched flea market! You know, I never heard of such abuse towards birds before until I came to this forum. After reading about these bird flea markets its enough to make me want to find one myself and punch those morons right in the nose! I'm not sure what type of parrot that is, I have seen some people who have one or two on here but I don't remember what it was called.

looks like a green conure.get some veggies, fruits, brown rice, and some oatmeal.i wouldn't towel your bird and don't force yourself on her she's already been through alot so she's probably terrified. these birds live a long time no need to rush.

Actually, I think she (or he) is a Tovi Parakeet.

That is awesome that you came to his or her rescue!! Just wonder where you live? I agree with above..take your time...talk softly to it. The pics are kinda dark but it looks like a green cheek conure but there are others here who will know for sure. Best of luck and keep us posted :P

You should read Michael's Taming Article. Targeting (covered in the article) is completely hands-off, so you don't have to worry about being bitten.

As far as buying pellets, most people buy them online, because that's cheaper than buying them in a store. Harrison's is a really good organic pellet. Someone on here (GlassOnion I believe) really loves http://www.MySafeBirdStore.com

Welcome to the forum. I have no clue what species your bird is other than from the photo that I don't believe it to be a green cheeked conure like someone else suggested.

By size, he (or she) is the size of a budgie, and I live in Colombia, and I can't find pellets, I already took her ( him) out of the cage with the Force/Reconcile technique.

If it's that small, it could be a Parrotlet.

In my other post I gave you a link to where you can buy pellets and they will ship them to you. If you don't like that store, there's others. Do a few Google searches and a bunch of online bird stores will come up.

You should still teach targeting, even if you want to force out/reconcile. Targeting can be used as a communicative tool later to teach tricks and good behavior.
