Howdy

Postby Angrychair » Mon Apr 09, 2012 5:29 pm

Hi, my names Adam. I'm into exotic and strange pets, I personally own 6 tarantulas, 3 new world 3 old world:
Indian Ornamental - Poecilotheria regalis
Orange Baboon - Pterinochilus murinus
Fort Hall Baboon - Pterinochilus lugardi
Salmon Pink Birdeater - Lasiodora parahybana
Green bottle Blue - Chromatopelma cyanopubescens
Venezuelan Sun Tiger - Psalmopoeus irminia

a 20 month old male veiled chameleon, and a 16 month old male New Guinea frilled neck lizard. My girlfriend had 2 parakeets, a Boston terrier and a shit-tzu which is really my dog.

But to the reason I'm here, my girlfriend Cassie and I just purchased a hand-fed sun conure from my neighbor who accidentally had some babies last year. I say accidentally because they had gotten out of breeding birds, and just were keeping their collection for pets, and ended up having a clutch from their sun conures last year. We don't know his sex, but just going to call him a boy.

It's my girlfriends second bird, she had a Jenday conure previously. Who, was really a 1 person bird and attached her her 9 year old daughter the most. He would tolerate other people, etc. and let you pet him some, and step up to you, but you couldn't man handle him or do as you wish with his wings.

Our little 1 year old Skittles, amazed me. When we went over to pick out which sun conure we wanted, as they had 2, once she had gotten them out of the cage and they calmed down, they were both super tame, I was totally surprised. He lets you just pick him up, rub his belly, stretch out his wings, really anything you want. He is sort of shoulder spoiled, and once you let him on your shoulder, or any object, he will try to fly away from you if you attempt to touch him. He's also pretty spoiled, and really wants you to share food with him. Right now we just have some Zupreen pellets, (yeah I read they suck and I'm sure I will be buying some Harrison's soon) and we feed him fresh fruits, vegetables, and bread.

We did clip his wings, a little at first but it didn't slow him down.

Anyway I hate to go on and on about our new birdie, but I was just so amazed at how much more handle-able he was from day 1 vs the jenday she had after a couple years eve. I guess being hand fed does make a big difference. So I signed up here to gain knowledge and experiance on how to better take care of our new bird, so he can live a happy healthy life, we would love to train him to be go outdoors, and not fly away, so we can take him to certain places with us, or at least enjoy teaching him cool stuff like that. We've seen a lot of youtube videos of people with sun corures flying from person to person outdoors and it really impressed us.

Take care, I'll be perusing the forums

Hi and welcome! The only way to prevent flight is to buy a harness or a travel carrier. Even clipped birds get lost... Actually, TONS of clipped birds get lost because clipping gives owners a false sense of security. I would look into an Aviator Harness and a safe carrier which you can use to take him outside. Sunshine an fresh air is loved by our feathery friends.

we have talked about getting a harness with when we had the jenday. What size should I get for him, a small or x-small?

The aviator harnesses are sized by weight. Shoot off an email or call the supplier and they should be able to tell you the correct size.

I use a small on my Ekkie, but may need a bigger one down the track.

Good luck with your new fid :) :danicing:
