Frozo and I could use some Help!

Postby Frozone » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:36 am

First off, hello and thanks ahead of time for any and all information and help you can give me, I truly do appreciate it.

Second, my bird is frozen.
Since I got him home yesterday he has changed positions only once, and never more than 6 inches high in the cage. In part I can understand what he suffered through, especially going through the traumatizing experience that is my mom's driving in a box. BUT, what worries me is that he hasn't made a move for the food or water bowl since he got home. I know how scared he was/is so I had his cage covered with a towel for the night and part of the day. This resulted in a valiant effort up the ladder where he is still perched on the top rung as we speak. I'm determined to get him tamed down and trusting so I'm near him quite a bit but he still has his own private space if he wants it. He's taking a little siesta right now but I'm not sure if that's a sign of trust or if he's just pooped from watching everyone. I'm sorry if I'm leaving out some details here or if I'm all over the place, I'm just really worried that he won't eat or drink at all. Please reply back to this! Any ideas are good ideas!

Sorry, just to update:
It does look like he ate a bit of millet seed. It obviously isn't a complete diet but I'm happy he at least had a snack.

Hi. I'm not sure how similar this is to your situation but my grey seemed frozen when I moved into a house with other people. He wouldn't move, eat or play if he could see or hear people but he did get to his food and water at night time with no one around. To get him used to his new home I left the cage door open for him and let him wander round of he pleased and informed everyone not to touch or go near his cage so that it was his own little birdy haven. Hope your birdy livens up soon :)

I am a firm believer in leaving cage doors open.
I would cover all but the front of the cage. Give him a variety of foods in different cups. Level the food so you can see if it has been touched. Put a crust of bread on his perch. Measure the amount of water in the cup. Mine like orange juice. That would give him liquid and electrolites.

Thanks for the advice guys! He's really been chowing down on the millet, but only when I'm not around. I have to sneak to catch him. I actually had to get him from a pet store because I couldn't find any local breeders. In the store they had all their wings pre-clipped and very few high-up perches. I'm not sure if his natural instinct for getting to high ground will kick in or not but so far he's being a bit of a ground bird. I'm going to try putting in some shallow saucers on the bottom with water, pellets, and a few fresh foods if he seems interested. Hopefully all goes well!

To get him out of the cage to investigate his surroundings, try putting some millet outside the cage door and leave the room.

It sounds like your making progress. Good work.

Myrtle took a while to come out of her cage. All I could touch was her feet if I wigled my finger and said tickle tickle first. Now she is like a feathered growth on my left shoulder.

You can do it.

Yes I know all of this now. I got him almost a week ago and now he's stepping up on my finger and hanging out on the jungle gym. Thanks a lot everyone!
