Hello all! I have been owned by my parrot for three years. Yes, he owns me! I rescued him when he was four years old. The owners were threatening to just let him loose unless I took him. Already the owner of a Parrotlet, and having been a sucker for abused cockatiels as a kid, I knew that taking on another parrot was a huge responsibility, and once you have more than two Parrots, your home can easily become Skid Row for Wayward Parrots!
I tried to say no, and not look at the bird, but when they started talking about how much they hated him, and that they kept him covered 24/7, I grew angry. I forced myself to look at the bird.
Cowered in a rusty dog kennel that was placed on the floor was a filthy and disheveled sickly looking Senegal. He had one perch, his water was filthy, he has grocery store bought bird seed in a broken coffee mug and his only toy was a Caribbeaner clip with an eye screw attached to it. I was shaking with rage. I agreed to attempt to take him out. I went home to get a pistacio and returned, unsure of what would happen.
I was expecting to be bitten to shreds, because these people described him to be the spawn of the devil. I spoke softly, I showed him the pistacio, he approached, and gently took it from me, then wolfed it down! He looked so grateful, and I asked him if he "wanted out?", and opened the kennel.
Within five minutes he was getting a hardcore scritching session to remove about six months worth of pin feather debris, and then he let me cuddle him to my chest. I discussed the situation with my husband, and the next day, BiBi had the home he deserved. He's spoiled rotten, healthy ( but overweight- 198 grams - granted the avian vet says he's the largest Sennie she has ever seen), and he 's my little buddy. He is loved, loved, loved! He won't let anyone but me touch him, and he spooks easily, but he is getting better over time. He had even forgotten how to play with toys and was only terrified of them! He is especially afraid of men, because the previous owner was a man and used to flick him on the beak, but I am confident he will learn to trust someday.
He's an amazing little guy, he speaks over 30 words/ phrases clearly ( I wish he'd forget the cuss words his previous owner taught him!) and he's learning tricks and is just a little loverboy! How could anyone have been so cruel?
So, that's our story. Bibi owns my heart, and I decided to join this forum because Bibi is overweight, and I need to get him on a plan to lose weight, so I will be looking for advice. Thanks for letting me share!
